1969 stands as the moment when Ford took the reins of performance into its own corporate hands, effectively pushing Shelby out of the spotlight. With the Mach 1 and the Boss Bros, Ford didn’t really need to have someone else deliver horsepower for the Mustang. The Cobra Jet engine, introduced a year prior, put a writing on the wall so big, it could be read with both eyes closed, in the dead of night.
