Kentucky earned the first signature win of the Will Stein era yesterday, walking into Kyle Field and defeating the 9th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 31-21.
Kentucky’s defense made some big plays early in the game to keep the Aggies off the board until about 5 minutes to go in the half when the Aggies cashed in on a 14-play, 79-yard drive. The Cats were able to respond with a touchdown with just under 2 minutes remaining in the half to make it 7-7 headed into the locker room.
Last week, Kentucky came out flat in the second half, but yesterday was quite the opposite, as Kentucky put together a fantastic third-quarter performance where they outscored the Aggies 21-0 and outgained them 196-20.
It was a massive win for Will Stein and the Wildcats, to say the least. The Cats went into a tough environment on the road in the SEC and took down a top-10 team in a game where they were a 16-point underdog headed into kickoff.
Kentucky will now have a chance to move to 3-1 if they can take care of business against South Alabama next week before one of the biggest games of the season, in my opinion: A road trip to Columbia, South Carolina, to face off with the Gamecocks.
Today is also a big day for UK Volleyball, as Craig Skinner’s squad is set to take on Louisville in a big-time rivalry matchup. The 4th-ranked Wildcats will take on the 3rd-ranked Cardinals this afternoon at Historic Memorial Coliseum at 3 p.m. ET.
There’s a lot of hype around today’s matchup with tickets sold out and the match being broadcast on ABC. It’s the first top-5 matchup inside Historic Memorial Coliseum.
The Wildcats have some impressive wins in the non-conference slate, but this group surely has a bad taste in its mouth after falling to SMU down in the Bahamas. A win today against the rival Cards would certainly do a lot to help that.
