When Will Stein took over in Lexington, he was crystal clear about what he needed under center: A quarterback who was accurate, quick-thinking, and a natural leader. So when Kenny Minchey decided to leave Notre Dame, Stein made a late, aggressive push for the 6-foot-2 signal-caller.
At the time, Minchey was committed to Nebraska. The decision was made, and everything was lined up. Except for the signed paperwork.
Thankfully for Big Blue Nation, Stein convinced him to flip his commitment to the Kentucky Wildcats.
On Saturday, Minchey proved exactly why Stein zeroed in on him with his performance in Kyle Field.
In Kentucky’s 31-21 upset over No. 9 Texas A&M, a game where the Cats were 17-point dogs, Minchey delivered a masterclass in game management. The raw numbers are excellent, but his composure was equally impressive:
- Surgical accuracy: The first-year starter was nearly perfect, finishing 14-for-18 overall, which included a flawless 9-for-9 performance in the second half.
- Pocket poise: Efficiency only tells half the story for Minchey. He navigated the pocket beautifully, repeatedly choosing to tuck the ball for a positive two or three yards instead of taking drive-killing sacks or forcing throws into tight coverage. It won’t show up on the stat sheet, where he finished with -2 yards, but it consistently kept the offense on schedule. After the game, Stein said he set a goal for Minchey to have 100 yards rushing to show him to be aggressive and “rush forward.”
- Ice in his veins: Fighting through the deafening noise of the 12th Man at Kyle Field, Minchey completed his final 11 passes of the game to methodically close out the Aggies for the Cats’ 3rd win on the road against a top-10 team since 2023.
He showed exactly what he is made of when the lights were brightest. And Will Stein was effusive in his praise for his QB.
Talking to Tom Leach after the game, Stein said, “He’s very, very poised, great week of prep. Didn’t let last week’s game faze him in terms of his preparation…He was aggressive; that’s what we want him to be, use his legs and move the pocket…He played an outstanding game.”
That he did. And he will look to build on that back at home next week against South Alabama.
