That's what YOU want, I think it is a wise decision to have the cpu/ram in it so it can be used as a standalone headset. I don't have a good PC for VR and these days a good PCVR GPU is about as expensive or much more as the base headset.
also, I'll bet there aren't many cheap socs that are capable of providing wireless part AND capable of decoding the stream and be able to do some on headset tracking stuff, handle camera/eyetracking.
yeah it currently doesn't run the PC version of Alyx properly due to needing to go through the x86 emulation layer.
these days I play much more standalone games on my Pico 4(the original one) than I play PCVR games, and I don't mind the lesser graphics. Would I like better graphics? Yeah of course I would, and the soc in the Frame is already kuch more powerfull as the Quest 3, and combined with eyetracking for foveated rendering it might make native VR games look much better as my current Pico 4. (But then again, I'm not such a graphics whore, I grew up with the whole graphics evolution from pong till the latest highend PC game, and I still like to play the old games too).
PS. I do agree they should at least have used OLED comparable displays (even at the same resolution, like the Pimax Dream Air SE).
