I’m planning to move back to Visalia, CA, and whenever I mention avoiding Tulare and Porterville, people always ask, “Why not Tulare/PT?”
Honestly, both towns remind me too much of Merced. I used to get stopped constantly in Merced just for walking down the street, even riding a basic bike at less than 5 mph. The same thing has happened to me many times in Tulare and Porterville, and I’m white, so that says a lot.
I’d rather avoid towns where I’ve had repeated negative experiences with the police.
People always say, “Well, it never happened to me,” until it happens to them. Then suddenly they understand why people speak up.
I already avoid Tulare whenever I can, and Porterville is even more of a no-go for me, especially since I’m transgender. A quick Google search will tell you why.
