CBS posted an article about Jon Scheyer on Monday discussing why he turned down the Dallas Mavericks job this a few months ago.
Basically, Scheyer said a couple of things: first, that Duke was home, and second, that he hadn’t accomplished the things he set out to do when he took the job:
“Anybody that knows me, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself not seeing this thing through,” Scheyer told the Glue Guys podcast, as quoted by CBS. “That’s just the bottom line. I’m at a one-of-one place where not often you get your dream job when you’re 33. That’s what happened to me. … I think we have so much left to do. So much left to accomplish. We talked about my family earlier; this is where my family is, this is home for me…The NBA is obviously the highest level of whatever you can do. In my own world, I know this is where I’m supposed to be now, doing what I’m doing with our guys.”
The key word there may be now. Scheyer is a beloved figure at Duke, and his astonishing success as a coach came after the love, not because of it.
We’d love it if he stayed at Duke as long as his predecessor Mike Krzyzewski did, but we know that might not happen.
