We’ll know for certain on Wednesday. But there was a change to the Falcons media availability schedule for this week that hit my inbox Tuesday morning, and the “starting QB” press conference scheduled for Wednesday now has Cooper Rush’s name in that slot.
It’s not an announcement, it hasn’t been confirmed by the team — but it seems pretty obvious that’s the direction we’re heading.
We should also get updates on Wednesday from Stefanski on Michael Penix’s status and Tua Tagovailoa’s back, as well as the back issues Rush seemed to still be dealing with during Sunday’s loss to the Steelers. Could the plan at starting quarterback change over the course of the week? The quarterback depth chart has been such a wild ride since the beginning of camp, so nothing would surprise me at this point.
For those of you on the Jack Strand-wagon, I’m sure we’ll hear more from Stefanski Wednesday on how the rookie UDFA fits into the team’s plans, now and into the future. They seem high on him, but any UDFA out of a small program is going to need significant development. Strand is athletically gifted, and he’s also brilliant. His learning curve should be shorter as a result, but it still exists.
As our fearless leader Dave Choate likes to say, it’s time to gird our loins and start preparing for whatever surprises the Atlanta Falcons quarterback depth chart has in store for us this week.
Hopefully one of those surprises will be a divisional win over the Panthers on Sunday.
