Leeds 4-1 Newcastle — Match Report: Quick Blow, No Answers

Newcastle United suffered its first defeat — and a heavy one — under Matthias Jaissle as Leeds United demolished the Magpies in a 4-1 Premier League trouncing at Elland Road.

Three goals in 13 first-half minutes effectively decided the match before Noah Okafor added a fourth, with substitute Newcastle’s Bazoumana Toure providing only a late consolation for the Geordies in a night to forget.

Newcastle entered the game without an injured Anthony Elanga and then lost Nico Gonzalez after just 19 minutes with a concussion. The midfielder was struck in the face by Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross and attempted to continue, but ultimately Sean Steur had to replace him.

Goalie Lukas Hornicek kept Newcastle level with saves from Jayden Bogle as Leeds increasingly imposed its intensity while the Magpies found it hard to combine two passes and felt a bit lost on the pitch.

The initial resistance was bound to collapse at some point, and it did after 32 minutes, even though Ao Tanaka’s strike only went inside the goal after taking deflections off Steur and Lewis Miley, the latter ultimately credited with the own goal.

Three minutes later, former Newcastle target Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a header and celebrated the second goal, although replays showed Bogle was the one to give the ball its final touch to make it 2-0.

Newcastle offered virtually nothing in response, managing its first attempt only late in the half before Harvey Barnes was denied. Leeds struck again in first-half stoppage time when Calvert-Lewin drove into the penalty area and finished beyond Hornicek, sending Jaissle’s team to the lockeroom three goals behind.

Any remote hope of a comeback disappeared before the hour. Okafor collected Sven Botman’s attempted clearance before producing a good finish into the bottom corner to make it 4-0, with Jaissle responding by waving the white flag, introducing Touré and Joe Willock for Jacob Murphy and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, and calling it a day.

That was not the case for Touré, who entered the pitch determined to shift the narrative, if only slightly, and eventually claimed his first Premier League goal in the 89th minute, capitalizing on a rare Leeds mistake.

“We couldn’t match the intensity of Leeds and you see how difficult it can be to win a game in the Premier League,” Jaissle said. “We’ll have some ups and downs, and this was a big down. A tough night.” The head coach also revealed concerns over Elanga’s injury, with further assessment required to determine its severity.

The defeat ended Newcastle’s unbeaten start and handed Jaissle his first major setback after five competitive matches without a loss, albeit with many worrying trends and a sure-to-come regression to the mean materializing on Monday.

Newcastle returns to St James’ Park against Hull City on Saturday, Sept. 19, before everybody packs their bags for a three-week international break immediately afterward.
