Newcastle Hit with Shocking Anthony Gordon Payment Delay After £69 Million Sale

Newcastle United’s £69 million sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona was one of the defining moves of its summer overhaul, providing significant financial room while removing one of the club’s most valuable players.

Or so we thought.

According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Barcelona has agreed with Newcastle to postpone an approximately €22 million (£18.9 million) payment until June 2027. Now, the Magpies will have to wait considerably longer than expected to receive the first major installment.

The payment had originally been expected a year earlier as part of the structure negotiated when Gordon moved to Barcelona in May. However, El Desmarque reported that Barcelona still owes Newcastle approximately €69 million (£59 million) for the England international. That was divided between the short-term payment of around €22 million and almost €47 million (£40 million) in longer-term obligations before the latest change.

Barcelona’s annual financial report reportedly disclosed the deferral, which provides the Catalan club with additional breathing room as it manages significant transfer debts. The unusual aspect from Newcastle’s perspective is that the Magpies reportedly agreed to the revised schedule without an issue, fully trusting the Spanish giants.

Barcelona’s financial report stated that the payment had initially been scheduled for July 31, 2026. After the agreement with Newcastle, approximately €22.3 million will instead become due at the end of the current season. That does not change the overall transfer fee owed to Newcastle, but it does alter when the club receives a significant portion of the money.
