2 killed, others injured in shooting in Downtown Dallas

Two people are dead, and several others are reportedly hurt after a fight on Commerce Street led to a shooting. Dallas Police say a police officer killed an armed person involved in the shooting.

According to the Dallas Police Department, officers were called to a disturbance at about 2 a.m. at 2000 Commerce Street.

Police said officers confronted an armed person after arriving at the location to find multiple people had been shot. One of the shooting victims and an armed person shot by police both died at the scene. Dallas Police have not confirmed the number of other people injured in the shooting, but said more than one person was hospitalized in stable condition. No police officers were injured in the shooting.

Dallas Police have not yet released any details about what started the fight or what took place in the moments before they said an officer fatally shot an armed person.

Witnesses told NBC 5 that a fight between at least two people escalated to gunfire and that they heard at least 15 gunshots.

A man who spoke with NBC 5 said he was standing near a valet stand when he heard gunshots and saw people running. He said the gunfire killed a person near him.

“I thought I got hit. I was so close to the body … I’m just glad I didn’t,” the man said. “Having fun … not worth it. If you have little ones, make it back home to them.”

At least 90 officers from across the city were dispatched to the scene, and a large police presence remained at the location for several hours following the shooting. Commerce Street was reopened at approximately 9:15 a.m.

The Dallas Municipal Court building is adjacent to the location of the shooting, and the city said the Municipal Court will be closed Monday due to the ongoing investigation and will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
