DoorDash driver shot during delivery speaks out after hospital stay

A DoorDash driver is speaking publicly for the first time after being shot during a delivery in Mesquite.

Manuel Gonzalez, a husband and father of three daughters, is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds. He returned home on Wednesday after spending three weeks in the hospital.

“We cried together,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez was delivering an order to a home on Birch Bend shortly after midnight on Oct. 27. He said two women outside the home refused to give him the PIN number required to complete the transaction.

After three attempts, Gonzalez said he was finally given the correct pin. The women went back inside, but within a minute, he said, two other people came out and began shooting—hitting him more than six times.

“My husband was screaming at the top of his lungs for help, and they went back inside,” said Gonzalez’s wife, Patricia Garcia.

With his phone covered in blood, Gonzalez said he used voice command to call for help.

“I asked Siri to call 911, and the call goes through,” he said.

No arrests have been made, but Mesquite police say the investigation is ongoing.

“It’s really hard for people to believe that somebody got shot multiple times over DoorDash, but it’s a sad reality. That’s exactly what happened. There’s nothing more to the story,” Garcia said.

Gonzalez, the sole provider for his family, is unable to work and faces at least a year of recovery. The family is relying on a GoFundMe account to help make ends meet.

They’re holding onto hope that a food delivery gone wrong doesn’t derail the life they’ve built.
