After losing Quenda to Chelsea, Man United turn attention to Sporting rospect Blopa

After missing out on Geovany Quenda, Manchester United appear to be turning their attention to the next big talent coming through at Sporting CP.

When Ruben Amorim took over as Manchester United head coach in 2024, it seemed inevitable that he’d look to bring in some of the young players he had helped develop during his time at Sporting CP.

Geovany Quenda was high on the list, seen as one of the top prospects in world football. But despite Amorim’s interest, Quenda is set to join Chelsea in 2026. It’s a setback for United, especially since he would have fit perfectly into their right wing-back role.

But there may already be another option rising through the ranks at Sporting. Salvador Blopa has started to draw attention and could be the answer United are looking for.

United have a few areas that need addressing in 2026, and the right wing-back spot is one of them.

Amad has had a mixed spell in that role, and bringing in someone with upside makes sense. Salvador Blopa fits that profile well.

The Daily Mail reports United are weighing up a move for Blopa, who stands at 6ft 2in and has the athleticism suited to the position.

The teenager is drawing comparisons to Nuno Mendes, but Real Madrid are also interested. United have already started sounding out his availability.

Blopa offers more defensive stability than Quenda while still contributing going forward, which could be exactly what Amorim needs in that area of the pitch.

Why Salvador Blopa would be a good fit for Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has yet to bring in a player from Sporting CP since his departure, but Salvador Blopa could be the one to change that trend.

Blopa’s debut goal for Sporting gave a good indication of what he can offer going forward. His ability to cut inside and finish would suit Amorim’s system well.

Amorim likely knew of Blopa during his time at Sporting, but it’s only recently that the young defender has started attracting wider attention across Europe. Now would be a good time for United to move.

A January transfer could make sense not just on the pitch, but also as a way to mend any lingering tension between United and Sporting following Amorim’s exit.

If the move does happen, Blopa would have plenty of examples within the club to follow as he settles into life at Old Trafford.
