Sebastian Fundora takes some time to talk to Brian Custer on his upcoming weekend fight with Keith Thurman, the fight getting delayed from last year, and what he’s looking forward to going ahead in his career. Check out some excerpts of what ‘The Towering Inferno’ had to say below.
Fundora on Thurman’s confidence heading into their fight
“I expect the best Thurman. I expect the Thurman that beat Danny Garcia. Will we see it? I don’t know. But with that I’m bringing my best as the champion I am and it’s going to be a great night of boxing.”
On the injury that originally postponed this fight
“My hand actually do feel 100% now. Injuries happen in sports, we hit something wrong of whatever the case it was but we got some hand contusions on both hands too, made it completely not possible to have that fight in October. But we been training — we didn’t stop training, we just had to slow down on certain things with our hands. But we’re ready now for March.”
On what he thinks Thurman is underestimating about him
“I think he doesn’t think we’re mature enough to be in the ring with him, as in not experience-wise. I’ve been boxing my whole life as well…I think a lot of people think we just blasted on the scene because we’re tall and it just happened for us. No. Rome wasn’t built in one day and it’s the same thing for Sebastian Fundora.”
On the Spence vs Tszyu matchup
“I think with Tim and these past losses, I think there’s questions there. There’s questions there about what he’s going to do with another top level fighter. He did have his win in December but it wasn’t at that level. And then with Spence, I think Spence has been out for three years. So I think that’s even a bigger red flag for me. So I favor Tsyzu because even though he had those losses he still has the momentum of fighting, being comfortable in the ring, and being on that big stage where Spence hasn’t been since the Crawford fight.”
On who he most wants to fight
“There’s all kinds of names. Spence is coming back, that’s a fight that I would want. We have the other champions, we have Josh Kelly and Xander Zayas and I would like to have all the belts as well. But these are just ideas right now, we can’t really think too much on it until we pass Keith Thurman.”
