Laurel School District officials reported that a student was taken into custody Friday morning after an altercation inside Laurel High School led to the display of a knife before the start of the school day.
According to information shared with families, the incident occurred as bus riders gathered in the gymnasium prior to passing through the school’s metal detectors, a routine part of the daily arrival process. During that time, a confrontation broke out among students, and one student produced a knife.
School staff, district constables and the School Resource Officer responded immediately and contained the situation. A student who attempted to intervene in the altercation received a minor cut above the knee. Medical personnel treated the student on-site, and officials said the student is fully ok, according to the district.
The student who displayed the knife was removed from the area, secured by law enforcement and taken into custody officials said. District leaders said the matter is being handled in accordance with school policy and established law-enforcement procedures.
