Grass fire near Boulder was sparked by mowing equipment

Crews contained a grass fire that sparked just southeast of Boulder on Friday afternoon, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire burned about 10 acres of grassland near Cherryvale Road and U.S. 36, according to a sheriff’s office news release. The fire was originally reported to be 1 to 2 acres.

A spark from heavy mowing equipment operating on city of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks property grew into the grass fire, the release said.

The fire was reported just before 3 p.m. and was in the “mop up” stage around 3:30 p.m., according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Vinnie Montez. No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened or burned, but smoke was visible for miles.

Cherryvale Road remains closed between Marshall Road and South Boulder Road while Mountain View Fire Rescue crews continue to put out hot spots, Montez said.

The Lafayette Fire Department, Louisville Fire Protection District, Boulder Fire Rescue and the Boulder Police Department also responded.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
