While Tyson Fury is gearing up to return from his latest retirement to face Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11, Fury’s father has come out to claim that his relationship with Tyson has been completely destroyed thanks to interlopers, while also claiming that Tyson hasn’t been the same since his series of fights with Deontay Wilder. John Fury claims that there’s no jealousy against his son as he’s never wanted or taken any of his money, but plainly gives his assessment of his son at this point in his career and explains why Makhmudov will be a tougher fight than many expect.
“I think he’s past his best,” John Fury said. “I’m a no-filter kind of guy. I love my son but there’s too many people patting him on the back and telling him he’s Tarzan when he’s not Tarzan. He’s been gone, Tyson, since the Wilder fights. It’s finished Wilder completely — done him, he’s not got a leg underneath him. It’s took a lot away from Tyson. Makhmudov, this is a problem. I’m the first one to say it.”
John Fury would continue by saying that he understands his son is testing himself, but that he just doesn’t have what once made his such a problem for the rest of the division, as Fury’s size combined with his mobility made him such a unique heavyweight.
And while Tyson might’ve come out 2-0-1 in three fights against Wilder, John insists that every shot Tyson took in those fights took an irreversible toll to where Tyson will never be what he once was. Most fans will remember Tyson seemingly rising from the dead in their first fight after taking some huge shots from Wilder, who was regarded as the biggest puncher in the sport, but even that effort took something out of Tyson he’ll never regain as John sees it.

“Tyson was a formidable man, but when you fight one of the hardest punchers in boxing history three times it takes it out of you and it never gets replaced. You can never fill that tank up like you had it before…(Tyson) fought his heart out, he went to the well, he gave his all. And when he got that knockout, Tyson, he had nothing left after that. He laid it all on the line.”
The whole world, however, will be able to see what Tyson has left in just a few weeks time but you can watch John Fury’s full video interview in the link at the top.
