Khalil Mack re-signing gives Chargers hope

The Los Angeles Chargers are changing all over the place this offseason, but one thing that should stay the same is Khalil Mack’s spot on the defense.

Mack, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, is returning for his 13th season in the league and fifth with the Chargers. ESPN insider Kris Rhim believes Mack re-signing means he feels confident in the Chargers’ abilities to contend this season.

“Mack, 35, was still one of the best players on the Chargers’ defense in 2025 and perhaps the team’s most respected player. Re-signing him was a priority for Los Angeles, and his return shows that Mack believes the Chargers can compete for a title in 2026,” Rhim wrote.

Mack played in 12 games for the Chargers last season, recording five and a half sacks and 32 tackles for the team. While he missed some time, he still proved to be a strong player on the defense, emerging as the top pass rusher apart from Odafe Oweh, who was acquired in a midseason trade with the Baltimore Ravens for defensive back Alohi Gilman.

Oweh signed with the Washington Commanders in free agency, which means Mack will need to step back into the top pass rusher role. If he can play like his peak self, the Chargers should be in great shape.
