Morristown Medical Center has earned an “A” grade for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, marking the hospital’s eighth consecutive top rating since spring 2022.
The recognition places the Atlantic Health System flagship among a select group of hospitals nationwide to achieve consistent excellence across four years of Leapfrog evaluations. The grades, released twice annually in spring and fall, assess how well hospitals protect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.
NEW JERSEY RANKS THIRD NATIONALLY
New Jersey ranked third in the nation for the percentage of hospitals receiving an “A” grade — 52 percent — the same ranking the state held in spring 2025, according to data released Thursday by The Leapfrog Group and the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, the regional leader for Leapfrog.
The state also achieved a 100 percent participation rate in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the highest in the country.
In all, 67 New Jersey hospitals were graded:
- 35 earned an “A” (52%)
- 21 received a “B” (31%)
- 10 earned a “C” (15%)
- One received a “D” (1%)
- None received an “F.”
Five hospitals improved their grades, six declined, and 56 remained the same. Two hospitals—Bergen New Bridge and The Heights University Hospital (formerly CarePoint Health Christ Hospital)—did not receive a grade because of insufficient data.
NATIONAL OVERVIEW
Leapfrog, an independent nonprofit founded in 2000, evaluates more than 3,000 hospitals nationwide. Its Hospital Safety Grades are based on data from Medicare and Leapfrog’s own surveys and are intended to help consumers compare hospitals on the basis of safety.
In addition to New Jersey, the top five states with the highest percentage of “A” hospitals were Utah (ranked first for the fifth consecutive reporting period), Virginia, Connecticut, and North Carolina. Iowa, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming had no hospitals receiving an “A.”
