Sydney Shaw led WVU Women’s Basketball in scoring for the second game in a row, putting together a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds as the Mountaineers (3-0) took down the Temple Owls at the Hope Coliseum.
Shaw made four of seven three-point shots, while junior guard Gia Cooke also netted 16 points. The Owls played West Virginia close during the opening period, but they ended the frame on an 8-0 run that began with a three-pointer from Butler transfer forward Riley Makalusky, who dropped 12 points in 20 minutes off the bench, and ended with another triple from Shaw just before the buzzer.

The Mountaineers allowed Temple to convert on just 33.3 percent of their shots from the field (6-of-24 from three); while West Virginia put on a strong shooting performance, making 52.5 percent of their shots and 43.5 percent of their threes, they also made plenty of errors, turning the ball over 18 times. Even so, the Mountaineers’ consistent pressure allowed them to methodically add to their lead, outscoring the Owls in each period of play.
Temple made just one shot in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as West Virginia pushed their lead as high as 32.
Up next, WVU Women’s Basketball will face No. 15 Duke in the Greenbrier Tip-Off in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., traveling to the luxury resort in their first real test of the season.
