This reading group is designed to introduce Princeton undergraduates to the rich intellectual world of Hasidic Jewish texts and ideas. Emerging in the eighteenth century, Hasidic thought is a mystical tradition of religious and philosophical reflection that offers profound insights into questions of individuality, meaning, and life in the modern world. The program is structured to provide students with a grounding in key concepts in Hasidic thought, with each week exploring a different theme and drawing on sources from thinkers representing a range of Hasidic schools. The program will consist of a 90-minute seminar followed by dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome, regardless of religious, cultural, or disciplinary background.
