With such a small pool to start with, like at most 400 people, I can see it starting with people versus requirements and traits. For head coach it is more like 100-120 possible candidates.
What percentage of position coaches and coordinators are hired each year from outside the NFL? I would guess a very small percentage.
The college head coaches that have come into the NFL as head coaches have had very limited success -- so can't imagine most (good) franchises are looking for head coaches this way.
