I'm surprised they're playing him (Butler injury or not). He's not only not vested in the team's performance vs his own, he may even be looking to show out individually at the expense of the team. All that is in addition to the obvious injury risk.
The only thing I can figure is that there is no market for him under his current contract while he's in street clothes. Or maybe teams' are questioning his health, physical or otherwise, and this is the way to address that concern.
