Comment on Oculus Founder on Meta Cuts: “The ‘Meta abandoning VR narrative’ is obviously false” by Jistuce
"Then a little company with vision came along its name was Steam (do you know them). " Honestly, no. I have never heard of a company named Steam. You might mean Valve, who launched a store named Steam after several years of making games for traditional retail sale. nVidia predates Valve, though. AMD does too, but they didn't make 3D accelerators back then. They got into that market by buying ATi... who also predates Valve(ATi predates nVidia, even). So does 3DFX. And 3D Labs. And all the other 3D accelerator companies that have faded away, forgotten as people try to pretend the modern market is just how things have always been and not deeply unhealthy. "Small minded Microsoft used to say computers don't need fancy graphics cards. " Microsoft didn't make computers. They made software FOR computers, and were in no position to dictate the hardware platform. They supported fancy graphics cards as soon as there were fancy graphics available to support. There's plenty of DOS games that support 3D accelerators even though MS-DOS didn't support 3D accelerators, because software under DOS took over the machine and spoke directly to the hardware, so game support was not remotely contingent on OS support. While this was not a problem for users of older Windows versions that ran atop MS-DOS, making Windows 95 a viable target for game developers was a major goal because it was the beginning of an ultimately-successful attempt to migrate people off of MS-DOS and replace it completely with Windows NT. "Do you see a pattern. Have I taught you anything." Yes. That you don't actually know the history you are preaching about.
