Chicago Bears defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator Al Harris interviewed for the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator vacancy today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. So far, this is Harris’ only interview that has been set up for this cycle.
Since his playing days, which included 2003 to 2010 in Green Bay, Harris has worked with the Miami Dolphins (2012), Kansas City Chiefs (2013-2018), Florida Atlantic (2019), Dallas Cowboys (2020-2024) and most recently was hired by the Bears in 2025.
As far as on-field roles go, Harris served as the Chiefs’ secondary/cornerbacks coach from 2016 to 2018, the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach from 2020 to 2024 (with the assistant head coach title in 2024 under his former head coach Mike McCarthy) and the Bears’ defensive back coach (with a defensive pass game coordinator title) in 2025.
As a player, Harris started 128 games (102 with the Packers) and posted 21 career interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008, along with second-team All-Pro honors in 2007. Harris has been in coaching ever since his last season as a player in the league, 2011 with the St. Louis Rams.
Back in 2013, Harris retired as a Green Bay Packer. In 2021, he was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. Officially, Harris wasn’t a member of the 2010 Super Bowl team, as he started the season on the physically unable to perform list, was activated off the list and then was waived in early November. He signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins the day after passing through waivers and was later placed on the injured reserve and waived with an injury settlement. The next year, he tore his ACL with the Rams, the last time he had an opportunity to play in the league.
The team sent Harris a Super Bowl ring for being on the team for the 2010 season.
In 2025, under Harris’ watch, his Bears led the NFL with 23 interceptions and 33 total turnovers. Chicago had a +22 turnover differential, also the best mark in the league.
In other news, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has re-signed with his team, despite being a free agent coordinator and setting up interviews with the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders this offseason.
