Liverpool had managed to stretch their undefeated run to 12 games heading into Wednesday’s return to Champions League action against Marseille but when you dug into it, few of those matches had been particularly convincing or enjoyable affairs.
For those eager for a little positivity around the 2025-26 edition, though, in the end a trip to France provided both one of the better performances of the season for the Reds, and one with a convincing 3-0 final scoreline that ensures a place in the knockout rounds.
“We defended well, we attacked well, we played well,” was right back Jeremie Frimpong’s review. “Nothing went wrong. I don’t think we conceded that many chances. It was a well deserved win. We played really well, kept the ball, created chances and finished them.”
Previously, a hard-fought nil-nil draw with Premier League frontrunners Arsenal away had probably stood as the best performance in their undefeated run. Now, the question will be whether the Reds can deliver as they did against Marseille in league action.
Even during their dire run through October and November that ended any hopes of a title defence, this is a group that managed good performances and results in Europe—including a 1-0 over Real Madrid—so Wednesday didn’t come as a complete surprise.
As for the Champions League, Liverpool only needed a point to mathematically secure a place in the knockouts, and with the win now a point in their final league phase game against Azerbaijan’s Qarabag FK at Anfield should be enough to secure a top eight finish.
“We’re in a good position in the Champions League,” Frimpong added. “Obviously we’re going to take every game as it comes but we’re still in the competition, so of course there’s a chance to see something at the end.”
