A suspect is dead, and a San Jose police sergeant was taken to the hospital Wednesday following a multi-county pursuit, according to authorities.
CHP said a green Corvette was carjacked at a San Jose dealership at around 2:37 p.m. Officers later found the vehicle and initiated a pursuit.
The suspect left city limits and arrived in Hollister, where the city’s police department said he was found around Central Avenue at Milles Road just before 3 p.m., and a slow-speed vehicle pursuit began. Authorities added the suspect was being followed by a San Jose police helicopter.
According to officials, the pursuit ended in the area of Buena Vista Road at Westside Boulevard, where the suspect’s vehicle became disabled.
Authorities report the suspect emerged from the vehicle armed with a handgun and a shootout ensued. Police said he then ran away and was found by San Benito County deputies around Buena Vista Road and Line Street, where there was another shootout.
According to the police department, the suspect carjacked another vehicle and drove away from Hollister.
Back in San Jose, officials said the suspect was involved in a shootout with the city’s police department in the downtown area, resulting in his death. Police added a sergeant was shot and taken to the hospital.
The police department informed the sergeant is in stable but critical condition.
CHP adds both directions of Highway 87 at Julian Street closed due to the police activity. An estimated time for reopening is unknown.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan released a statement that reads:
“Chief Joseph told me that the first thing our officer said when he got to the hospital was, “make sure someone takes care of my dogs”.
That’s the kind of person he is. That’s the kind of people we have on our @SanJosePD
force. People who put their lives on the line to protect our families during the day, and then go home at night to take care of their own families.
I had the opportunity to visit our officer soon after he arrived at the hospital. I told him and his family that my thoughts are with them and my prayers tonight will be for a full and fast recovery.”
This is a developing story. Details may change as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for updates.
