Golden Nuggets: It wouldn’t be a 49er offseason without a new defensive coordinator

49ers’ George Kittle, Fred Warner, Mykel Williams upbeat about injury recoveries (paywall)
“George Kittle was supine on the Eagles’ sideline on Jan. 11 when Philadelphia’s trainer knelt beside him and asked what he needed.

“I need a cart,” Kittle said. “I’m not going to be able to walk this one off.”

The San Francisco 49ers tight end knew immediately he’d torn his right Achilles tendon after making a 6-yard catch midway through the second quarter. Kittle said it “felt like someone put a shotgun up against my calf and pulled the trigger.”

Five 49ers defensive coordinator candidates after Robert Saleh’s departure
““Jim’s as good of a coordinator as there is,” Shanahan said. “And when you’re as good of a coordinator as there is, and you have the talent that they have, it’s a pretty lethal combination.”

Schwartz has taken part in two interviews for the Browns’ head-coaching vacancy, so keep an eye on that one. If the Browns pass over Schwartz for the top position, it would seem unlikely he would return as a member of that staff.“

Who will 49ers pick to replace Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator? A look at five candidates (paywall)
“The architect of the “Legion of Boom” defense, Bradley has what most coordinators won’t ever claim: something original.“

49ers overreactions: Do Seahawks, Rams have unshakable hold on NFC West?
“Speaking of Bill Walsh, he had a mantra that it was best to get rid of a veteran star player a year early rather than a year too late.

That is so much easier said than done.

Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and George Kittle have been and will continue to be huge pieces of the 49ers’ puzzle.

At some point, the 49ers will have a different running back, left tackle and tight end. But not next season.

But you might be proven correct. Who knows?

A year or so from now, maybe hindsight will determine that the 49ers should have gone in a different direction.

But coming off a 12-win season and with some of their absolute best players slated to return from injuries, the 49ers need to keep the veteran core together and integrate another good draft class into the roster.“
