Yuri Bezmenov, a former KGB officer and defector, described the process of demoralization as the first stage in a four-part strategy of ideological subversion used by the Soviet Union to weaken Western societies, particularly the United States.
Demoralization takes 15 to 20 years, according to Bezmenov, because it requires the re-education of one full generation of students.
This stage involves systematically undermining a nation’s values, beliefs, and institutions through the infiltration of Marxist-Leninist ideology into education, media, religion, and culture.
The goal is to change the perception of reality so thoroughly that even with access to abundant factual information, individuals cannot form rational conclusions to defend themselves or their country.
Bezmenov emphasized that 85% of KGB resources were devoted to such ideological subversion, not traditional espionage, and that this process was designed to make a society so cynical, apathetic, and divided that it would lose the will to resist external influence or internal collapse.
He cited the rise of 1960s counterculture figures into positions of power by the 1980s as evidence of this long-term strategy already being implemented.
