Officer fires at gunman after witnessing shooting on Broad Street, officials say

A man has been arrested after he was shot at by a Philadelphia police officer after, officials claim, the officer watched a shooting during a fight on Broad Street in Philly’s Hunting Park community on Monday night.

A section of Broad Street was closed off on Monday night due to a follow up investigation on the incident.

In sharing details on the incident on Tuesday, officials said the shooting happened after police responded to a report of a man with a gun at a Sunoco gas station along the 4100 block of North Broad Street at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday night.

At that time, officials said, several men were involved in an argument outside of the gas station.

However, the group soon left the gas station and crossed the street to the intersection of Broad and Jerome streets where, according to police, the argument turned violent.

At one point, officials said, a 29-year-old man in the group produced a firearm and shot another man in the chest.

A responding officer witnessed this shooting and returned fire, officials said.

However, no one was struck by the officer’s gunfire and when the alleged gunman fled down the 1300 block of West Jerome Street, officials said, the officer pursued them on foot and apprehended the individual without further incident.

Also, officials said, investigators recovered a handgun, believed to have been dropped by the gunman, from underneath a car on Jerome Street.

The man who was shot in the altercation, police said, was taken to a nearby hospital where they were listed in critical condition after suffering gunshot wounds to the chest and groin.

The alleged gunman, officials said, was taken into police custody and his identity was being withheld pending formal charges.

No one else was injured in this incident, according to police.

The officer involved in the shooting, who police said was a 36-year-old nine-year veteran of the force who was assigned to the city’s 39th police district, has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of investigations into the incident.

Officials said investigations within the Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division, the Officer-Involved Shooting Investigations Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office into this shooting were ongoing.
