This sounds like one cruel God? In other readings on the subject, it was mentioned that this 40 years of wandering was a punishment for not engaging in a conflict to "Take" the land "Promised Land" from its current inhabitants. I guess God wanted the current residence killed off? What? God became angry at the Israel's for not doing as instructed, and believing that he said it could be done. So he forced them to wander the wilderness for 40 years, so they would all die, and never set foot in the Promised Land...
