Miami football’s Malachi Toney torches Indiana’s defense with crucial 4th quarter TD

If there was ever a team that was good enough to hand Indiana football its first loss of the season, during the CFP National Championship game no less, it was Miami football. Quarterback Carson Beck and wide receiver Malachi Toney have played excellent string music all season long, and at such a crucial juncture, Toney scored an impressive touchdown off a pitch.

With Miami trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, 24-14, they needed a touchdown to stay alive against college football’s preeminent powerhouse. Beck pitched it to Toney, who ran 22 yards and shook off a few attempted tackles from Indiana to keep the Hurricanes alive, 24-21.

Toney was so impressive that he evaded an initial tackle attempt from Indiana defensive back Louis Moore to get things started for Miami. He then put on the brakes and hit two defenders with an epic spin move, shaking them off and causing them to bump into one another. Even then, there was a chance that his legs would get clipped.

Instead, the Miami wide receiver kept his balance and composure and waltzed his way to the end zone to bring Miami to within a single possession.

Miami loses steam as Indiana football’s dominance shines

While Miami lost in the end, 27-21, as they couldn’t execute later in the game, this play shows what an excellent pro Toney would make one day and why NFL scouts are salivating at the prospect of adding him even though he’s a ways away from being draft-eligible considering that he’s a true freshman.

Indiana football went 15-0 on the season, so Toney and the rest of the Miami football roster can hold their heads up high, knowing that there’s no shame in losing to one of the greatest teams in college football history. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza has simply been way too good all year.
