Chiefs Latest Coaching Move Will Make Patrick Mahomes Thrilled

The Kansas City Chiefs endured one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory in 2025. After enjoying a run of dominance that coincided with the start of Patrick Mahomes‘ career, the Chiefs missed the playoffs entirely this season, with Mahomes suffering a torn ACL late in the year that could cause him to miss time to start the 2026 campaign.

Assuming all goes according to plan for Mahomes with his injury rehab, he should be back on the field early next season. And when he returns, Kansas City is intent on making sure what happened this year does not happen again. As a result, head coach Andy Reid is revamping his coaching staff, and it sounds like old friend Eric Bieniemy is going to be returning to town.

Chiefs Set to Hire Eric Bieniemy as New Offensive Coordinator

Early in his career, Mahomes benefited greatly from having a stable coaching setup that featured Reid and head coach and Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator. As we all know, Mahomes would go on to enjoy a historic start to his career, with Reid and Bieniemy obviously playing a large role in helping his development.

After the 2022 season, Bieniemy jumped ship and joined the Washington Commanders, where he worked as their associate head coach and offensive coordinator. He only lasted one season with them before he transitioned to college football, where he worked in the same role with the UCLA Bruins in 2024. After one year there, he returned to the NFL, working as a running backs coach for the Chicago Bears.

With the Bears getting eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday night, and Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy being out of contract, that opened the door for Bieniemy to reunite with Kansas City. After reports emerged early on Monday linking the two sides to one another, it appears as if a deal has been hammered out.

“Reunion: All signs are pointing towards Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator, sources say,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported. “With Matt Nagy out of contract and in the head coaching mix, Kansas City plans to bring back Bieniemy, a valued member of Andy Reid’s staff from 2013-22.”

Chiefs Hoping Eric Bieniemy Can Help Get Offense Back on Track

Since Bieniemy’s departure, the Chiefs’ offense has struggled to reach the heights it hit during his time in charge. While they still made it to the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2024, missing the playoffs entirely this year let everyone know that something has to change. The hope is that with Bieniemy back, the offense will open up again in 2026 and beyond.

Of course, the team around Mahomes needs to be better than it has been the past few years, which has set the stage for a very important offseason in Kansas City. Getting Bieniemy back is undoubtedly a big win, but it won’t mean much if the Chiefs don’t go out and reinforce their roster over the next few months.
