Atlético de Madrid have been handed a tricky tie at Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
The draw, made Monday afternoon, will see Atlético head to Seville next month for a single match against Betis, who are seeking their first semifinal appearance since their 2022 Copa del Rey win. Meanwhile, Atleti are hoping to reach the semifinals for the third year running.
The match will take place at on the third, fourth or fifth day of February at Estadio de La Cartuja, where Atleti secured a 2-0 win over Betis in LaLiga earlier this season.
Elsewhere in the draw, holders FC Barcelona will travel to Copa darlings Albacete, one round after the Segunda side eliminated Real Madrid. Alavés will host Real Sociedad in a Basque derby, while Valencia and Athletic will square off at Mestalla.
The semifinal draw will be held in the second week of February.
Atlético were drawn against Betis in the quarterfinal stage of the 1995/96 Copa del Rey and the 2012/13 edition — the last two instances in which the Rojiblancos went on to win the cup. Atleti have won the past six Copa del Rey ties against Betis, dating to 1941.
