The Detroit Lions have been in offseason mode since their win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, January 4, in a 19-16 final score, and part of what’s kept them busy has been searching for the team’s next offensive coordinator.
But, while the Lions have been offseason-ing, other teams have been focused on the NFL playoffs and getting to the big game. One of those teams is the Bears, who, of course, are coached by the Detroit Lions’ former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson.
Johnson has led the Bears to the No. 1 spot in the NFC North this season, which is a major accomplishment seeing that they ended last place last season. Watching the Bears’ Cinderella story and what Johnson has done with them while the Detroit Lions have been tanking has been a tough thing for many in the Lions’ camp, and while we want to wish Johnson well, it’s hard not to get a bit upset by the whole thing. That’s especially true since the Lions’ last season ended so abruptly, their first game into the playoffs, despite expectations being so high.
Well, the Detroit Lions woke up to some news that may make them feel a bit better for two reasons, really.
The Detroit Lions Won’t Have to Watch Ben Johnson in the Playoffs
Okay, not to be harsh, but it will be nice for some Detroit Lions fans to not have to watch Johnson and the Bears any longer in the playoffs. The Bears fell out of the playoffs on Sunday, January 18, with a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in a 20-17 final score.
Now, the Bears are back to being in the offseason, and no NFC North team is left in the running. So, it’s an even playing field again, and next season, it’s anybody’s dream that could come true.
That’s one bit of good news. The other has to do with Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Los Angeles Rams, of course, are Stafford’s team. While Stafford hasn’t been with Detroit for years, this may be his final season, and for anyone who watched him with the Lions for more than a decade, it will likely be nice to see him do well in what may be his final season in the NFL. Even if it’s not his final season, he’s a good guy, and he deserves success.
Detroit Lions Searching for John Morton Replacement
The Detroit Lions are searching for their next offensive coordinator, after the team released John Morton on January 6, following just one season with the team. Head coach Dan Campbell was even making the offensive play calls for the majority of the season, and that didn’t go well, so this team needs an offensive coordinator stats.
After the Detroit Lions’ season wrapped up, reporters asked Campbell if he would keep making those offensive play calls for the 2026-27 season.
“I’m open to anything. I don’t know exactly where I’m at with that yet,” Campbell said. “I mean I guess one of the good things if I did do that, you don’t have to worry about somebody else leaving,” Campbell said. “You don’t have to worry about your play-caller leaving. So, that would be one of the perks of it.”
However, this team did significantly better, and got to the playoffs, with someone else calling those offensive plays, and hopefully that’s something Campbell will think twice about before he tries to do it again.
