After missing the last two WrestleManias, Brock Lesnar is reportedly set for a huge match at this year’s biggest event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lesnar made his return to WWE at SummerSlam back in August, attacking John Cena at the end of Night 2 of the event. He beat Cena at Wrestlepalooza, then helped Team Vision defeat Team CM Punk at Survivor Series: WarGames.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the company is planning a heavyweight clash between Lesnar and Gunther at WrestleMania 42.

The third time might be the charm for WWE, since there have been two different instances in which they wanted The Beast and The Ring General inside the ring.

Meltzer reported that WWE wanted them to face off after their famous encounter at the 2023 Royal Rumble. However, people in charge felt that Gunther hadn’t reached the same level as Lesnar.

The second instance was at WrestleMania 40, but Lesnar was entangled in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against Vince McMahon. He wasn’t part of the case, but his name was mentioned and bringing him back would have been a PR nightmare.

But now that Lesnar is back and Gunther is bigger than ever after retiring John Cena, this could be the right instance to bring them together inside the squared circle at the Grandest Stage of Them All.

Original Plans For Lesnar vs. Gunther in 2024

In an episode of The Bryan and Vinny Show last year, wrestling insider Bryan Alvarez shared the scoop on the planned match between Gunther and Brock Lesnar for WrestleMania 40.

The build would have started at the Royal Rumble, with Dominik Mysterio being initially involved.

“Yes, Dominik was going to eliminate Brock Lesnar, and they were going to, I believe, have a match. I think it was going to be Lesnar and Dominik in Australia, which of course Dominik would be destroyed, and then Brock and Gunther at ‘Mania. So that’s what was gonna happen, but ain’t happening now,” Alvarez said.

The Ring General ended up losing his Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40.

Gunther Open To Facing Lesnar

Speaking to The Daily Mail in late 2024, Gunther addressed the rumors that WWE had planned for him to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 40. He was aware of them and remained open to revisiting the opportunity to get in the ring with The Beast if it arose.

“Brock, for a long time, was the final boss of the whole company. So I always saw myself in my future to be in a similar position to him, and to be that you’ve got to get in the ring with that guy. We’ll see if there’s a chance for it to happen again. I’m more than up for it,” Gunther said.

The two-time World Heavyweight Champion had an amazing 2025 despite the hiccup of losing to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41. He ended up getting his revenge on Jey less than two months later, sending Bill Goldberg into retirement in July and making John Cena tap out in his farewell match last December.
