Letter: What is an immigration crime, and what is not

In a recent letter, the writer said, “Being in this country without legal authorization is itself not a crime” (“Enforce immigration law with humanity, respect,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 14). This statement is, in part, false. Anyone who enters the U.S. without permission has broken our immigration laws, which is a criminal offense.
