The Bears could shift All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle Sunday to protect quarterback Caleb Williams’ blind side against the Rams’ pass rush.
A source confirmed late Saturday the Bears have considered the move, which would have Thuney fill in for Ozzy Trapilo, who was lost for the season with a knee injury a week ago.
Theo Benedet, who started eight games this year, took his place in the eventual 31-27 victory against the Packers. The Bears promoted Braxton Jones from injured reserve earlier in the week, but the veteran hasn’t started since Week 4.
Last year with the Chiefs, Thuney moved from guard to left tackle in Week 15 when the team was struggling there. He stayed there through the Super Bowl.
Were Thuney to play tackle, the Bears likely would put either rookie Luke Newman or vet Jordan McFadden at left guard. Neither has started a game this year.
The Bears also promoted tight end Nikola Kalinic from the practice squad. He’ll mostly play on special teams.
