SBNation Reacts results: Seahawks fans strongly confident in another win over 49ers

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Each week we ask questions of the most plugged-in Seattle Seahawks fans and fans across the country.

It’s time for the Seahawks Reacts results! We skipped the confidence polling for a week and focused strictly on the Seattle Seahawks’ NFC Divisional Round showdown with the San Francisco 49ers. Will Seattle win, and if so by how many points? Most fans surveyed see a win by a single-digit margin, but there’s still plenty who believe the Seahawks will match or exceed their 10-point victory from last time.

For context, the last matchup saw 81 percent of respondents picking the Seahawks, so there’s a definite uptick on this occasion.

As for the heavier question of the week, is the season a failure if Seattle fails to win a playoff game? Not fail to win or reach the Super Bowl, but get immediately bounced by the 49ers in the Divisional Round. To my surprise, the results are damn near split evenly between yes and no.

Alrighty then! Lemme just take a look at some of the comments to get each side’s viewpoints.

My answers: Seahawks by 10+ and No

The Seahawks losing to the 49ers would be absolutely disappointing, but I don’t think I would go so far as saying the season was a failure. For the Hawks to win 14 games, the most ideal scenario had to occur–e.g., the defense becoming top 3 or 5; OL and run game improving; Darnold having a similar season instead of regression; hitting on rookies and FAs; improvements from second year players. There’s not much more one could ask for (….I can actually think of one, but nevermind).

Overall, the season was a huge success. The thing is, that would be difficult to say right after losing to the 49ers, even if it’s ultimately the truth.

Failure no. Kind of embarrassing yes. Losing at home, with the bye, when they lost their star TE, in addition to a lot of other star players. Yes, that would be kind of embarrassing. But I wouldn’t look at the season as a failure. New QB, 2nd year HC, best defense in the NFL. I would just hope they can keep the gang together (especially the defense) for one more run next year.

Failure is a strong word, but yes.

I will be disappointed if we lose. But, this season is already a massive success. Year 2, with so much change, young roster and almost everyone slated to come back, we will be good for a few years.

Yes, it will be a huge failure. We have everything in our favor stacked against us, if you know what I mean.
I’m not saying that we have to win it all.
I’m just saying that losing this particular game, now, it would be a disaster.
It will means that Shanahaan outcoached Mike once again and when it mattered the most.
It will means we cannot defeat the 49ers even when half their stars are out, our team is at its peak performance, with 2 week rest and only 6 days for them.
Our team will be cursed with the stigma of Dalton and Darnold, like “yeah good in reg season but in the playoff they all crash down”.

I feel like many of our fans are missing some really basic logic. This season passed the success marker months ago. Conflating “I would be very disappointed” with “the season was a failure” is emotionally hysterical.

Since 1997, teams favored by 7 points lose outright 26% of the time. The line opened at 5.5. Teams favored by 3.5 to 7 lost outright 35% of the time. We should win this game. There’s probably a 20-30% chance that we don’t. That’s football.

And that’s all! We’ll see you next week with new questions, which hopefully are focused on the NFC Championship Game and not reflecting on the 49ers game or looking at the NFL Draft.
