Built in the late 1700s and dubbed the “Halcyon House,” the Georgetown property at 3400 Prospect St., NW, has just become the most expensive residential real estate sale in DC’s history, according to Compass. The buyer is Joshua Harris, the owner of the Washington Commanders, and his wife, Marjorie, according to the Wall Street Journal. The news comes after the Commanders recently unveiled the design for their new stadium.
The historic exposed-brick house, which is over 30,000 square feet, sits on a little more than half an acre with a view of the Potomac River, and has 12 bedrooms, 9 full bathrooms, 13 half bathrooms, 12 parking spots, and an in-ground swimming pool. The house has undergone more than $12 million worth of restorations. The listing agents were Mark McFadden and Hunter McFadden, both of Compass.
Halcyon House was built by Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy. It’s passed through many hands during the centuries, including Albert Clemens (Mark Twain’s nephew), Georgetown University, and sculptor John Dreyfuss. In 2011, the mansion was bought for $11 million and used as the home to the Halcyon nonprofit, founded by Dr. Sachiko Kunō and Kate Goodall. Halcyon, which supports entrepreneurs in climate, health, and equity tech, has recently moved to a new location on 15th Street.
