It’s been a few weeks since the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, but the conversation isn’t done yet. While an online petition demanding an extended cut of the fifth and final season from Netflix has achieved a huge number of signatures from disappointed fans, the viral “fake ending” theory (AKA “Conformity Gate”) seems to have died a death — and rightly so.

The theory claimed the finale was fake and that a “secret episode” would premiere on Netflix on January 7 — but that didn’t happen. Fans then became convinced that the documentary One Last Adventure was a bait-and-switch – but when it landed on the streamer on January 12, it was as promised; a behind-the-scenes deep-dive of Season 5 and the series as a whole.

“Conformity Gate” was also backed by mysterious “countdowns” shared by fans. Of course, these turned out to be completely made-up, leaving many to suspect that the whole thing was more of a hoax than a theory. However, there is an official Stranger Things clock that’s currently ticking down – it’s just been buried by all the theory content. But what’s it for?

We all knew that Season 5 wasn’t going to be the end of the wider franchise. Stranger Things is a long established multimedia IP, so more content beyond the end of the flagship Netflix series was always inevitable. For starters, later this year, the 3D animated spinoff series Tales From ’85 will hit Netflix. But first, and much sooner, another new “chapter” will arrive.

On January 27, Dead by Daylight x Stranger Things Chapter 2 will launch across all major video game platforms. It’s the second Stranger Things DLC following the initial one released in 2019, and sees the return of Eleven, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Eddie, and even Vecna himself.

Perhaps one of the most exciting things about the game is the timer on the website. There might be no ominous chimes and ticks like the ones we get throughout Season 4 whenever Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) is about to make a kill, but watching the numbers crawl toward zeroes is still enough to make your hairs stand on end. Watch the trailer below:

Dead by Daylight is an online one-versus-four game (or “asymmetrical multiplayer”), in which one player takes on the role of a Killer (in this instance, it’s the dark wizard Vecna, AKA Henry Creel/One) and the other four play as Survivors (Hawkins teens in this case).

“Following the previous Stranger Things Chapter released in 2019, which featured The Demogorgon, Steve Harrington, and Nancy Wheeler, the world of the acclaimed Netflix series continued to expand,” the official synopsis for the game reads.

It continues: “Character arcs developed and new threats were introduced, with the fourth season introducing the most formidable threat to date. Henry Creel. 001. Vecna. The First. He goes by many names, but his goal remains the same: to spread the corruption of the Upside Down and reshape humanity as he sees fit. Though the threat he poses is of a world-ending scale, the people of Hawkins will not stand idly by. Dustin and Eleven have been instrumental in preventing Vecna’s villainous scheme from coming to fruition, proving that heart, wit, and a fair bit of psychic power can turn the tides in the darkest hour.”

“As the story of Stranger Things winds to a close, a dark new Chapter opens in The Fog. Standing at the center is Henry Creel, known in-game as The First…”
