Andrew Coverdale leaving Louisville to join Kentucky coaching staff
Kentucky Football head coach Will Stein has been non-stop since becoming the Wildcats’ head coach in early December. On top of assembling his coaching staff in Lexington, Stein was also leading the Oregon Ducks’ offense through the College Football Playoff until early January. The latest from Kentucky’s coaching staff assembly comes in the form of passing game coordinator Andrew Coverdale, who has a lot of ties to the Bluegrass State and is set to join Stein’s staff, according to KSR’s Nick Roush. Coverdale comes over to Kentucky from arch-rival Louisville, where he served as an offensive analyst on Jeff Brohm’s staff for the past two seasons. It’s not just the Bluegrass Rivalry that makes this a compelling hire. Coverdale was Stein’s high school offensive coordinator at Trinity. Stein was a part of three state championship teams and set the school-record for touchdown passes with 54. In Coverdale’s time at Trinity, he led the school to 11 state championships in 17 seasons as an offensive play-caller. Additionally, the Shamrocks were crowned national champions in 2011. Following his stint there, Coverdale headed north to Cincinnati to be St. Xavier’s offensive play-caller, where he won a state championship in 2020. While at Trinity, Coverdale helped two quarterbacks to two of the most accurate seasons in school history. Cam Smith completed 74.8% of his throws in 2008, and Nick Bohn finished with a 79.9% completion rate in 2017. Current Louisville offensive coordinator Brian Brohm, Jeff Brohm’s brother, was the National Player of the Year playing for Trinity in 2002. Now, Coverdale will look to help his former protégé get Kentucky Football back to competing at a high level in the SEC.

Kentucky adds edge rusher Tyler Thomas from South Alabama
Kentucky Football is not finished reshaping its roster through the transfer portal, and its latest move shows a continued focus on building strength up front. On Monday, On3 reported that the Wildcats added edge rusher Tyler Thomas, a transfer from South Alabama, giving head coach Will Stein’s staff another piece for a rebuilt defense. Thomas spent the last two seasons in Major Applewhite’s South Alabama program after beginning his career at UAB, where he redshirted in 2023. In 2024, he made an impact as a redshirt freshman, recording 20 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. He followed that up in 2025 with 17 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. At Kentucky, Thomas will join former South Alabama teammate Dominic Wiseman in Anwar Stewart’s defensive line room. He becomes the sixth transfer added to that position group this offseason and is expected to compete at defensive end under new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. There is also a personal storyline attached to his move. Thomas’ twin brother, Trent, transferred to Tennessee, setting up a family showdown in November when Kentucky travels to Knoxville. Overall, Kentucky has added more than 30 players through the portal, reshaping nearly every position group. With multiple returners still in place, Thomas and fellow newcomer Antonio O’Berry will look to earn early snaps and help solidify a defensive front that is being rebuilt for 2026.
