Severe cold weather protocol in effect starting Friday
With a blast of cold air hitting the state this weekend, Gov. Ned Lamont announced Connecticut will be in its severe cold weather protocol for six days. The protocol will start at noon on Friday and end at noon on Wednesday. Parts of Connecticut had temperatures as low as -9° on Wednesday morning, with winds making it feel even colder. Wind chills on Saturday morning could be well below zero, and a Sunday snowstorm is likely. “We’re about to experience some of the coldest weather Connecticut has had in quite a while, and it cannot be stressed enough that temperatures this low can be fatal if someone is outside for too long,” Governor Lamont said in a press release on Wednesday. Anyone in need of a shelter or a warming center can call 211 or visit 211ct.org to find available locations. Transportation is available if needed. Fire damages neighboring homes in New Haven
Firefighters battled fires in two side-by-side homes in New Haven on Wednesday afternoon. It happened just before 3 p.m. on Pierpoint Street. Arriving firefighters found fire coming from both homes, according to Fire Chief John Alston. Conditions were difficult due to the cold. A number of hydrants in the area were frozen, Alston said. Firefighters had to find working hydrants on other streets and stretch hoses. he said. They also drew water from a tanker. While on the second floor, firefighters were hampered by clutter and stacked boxes, Alston said. They have not yet determined in which home the fire started. There were no injuries, but several people were displaced due to the amount of damage to the houses.
