Rennes beat Metz to move into fourth place in Ligue 1
METZ, France (AP) — A first goal of the season for Valentin Rongier gave Rennes a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Metz and moved it into fourth place in Ligue 1 on Friday. The fourth win in a row for Rennes took it above Strasbourg and Lille. Beye Habib’s side was behind only Lens, Marseille and league leader Paris Saint-Germain, who it plays next weekend. The only goal came midway through the first half when Rongier, who struck the woodwork a few minutes earlier, hit the net with a right-foot strike. Metz had won three of its previous four league games and pushed forward as the game went on but could not get an elusive equalizer. Ball scores 16 as Monmouth knocks off Ball State 80-73
EASTON, Pa. (AP) — Andrew Ball scored 16 points off of the bench to lead Monmouth over Ball State 80-73 at the Lafayette Classic on Friday. Ball shot 6 for 9, including 2 for 3 from beyond the arc for the Hawks (3-3). Jinup Dobuol scored 12 points while going 5 of 7 (2 for 4 from 3-point range). Jack Collins had 11 points and shot 4 for 10, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc. Davion Hill led the Cardinals (2-4) in scoring, finishing with 21 points and two steals. Ball State also got 14 points from Armoni Zeigler. Juwan Maxey finished with 13 points. Monmouth entered halftime up 35-29. Dobuol paced the team in scoring in the first half with 12 points. Monmouth used a 9-0 second-half run to come back from a two-point deficit and take the lead at 60-53 with 10:05 left in the half before finishing off the victory. (AP) — Gavin Garcia rushed for a career-high 151 yards and the game-winning score as Kent State rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Northern Illinois, 35-31 on Friday in the season finale for both teams. The Golden Flashes (5-7, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) trailed 31-20 early in the final quarter, but Cade Wolford broke free for a 31-yard rushing score to cut the deficit to one possession. Kent State forced a punt and took the lead for good on Garcia’s 26-yard rush with 4:11 left in regulation. Dru DeShields was 11-of-22 passing for 207 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Dashawn Martin caught three passes for 91 yards and a score, and Wayne Harris had three catches for 46 yards. It was the first win for the Flashes at Northern Illinois since Sept. 25, 1966, breaking a 59-year drought. Northern Illinois (3-9, 2-6) was paced by Chavon Wright’s 185 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 30 carries, and Jalen Macon added 65 yards and two scores on 17 carries. Camper scores 22 and Nevada wins 81-65 against San Francisco
PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) — Corey Camper Jr. scored 22 points as Nevada beat San Francisco 81-65 on Friday in the consolation game of the Acrisure Holiday Classic. Camper also added six assists for the Wolf Pack (5-3). Ethan Croley scored 11 points while going 5 of 7 from the field and added 10 rebounds. Elijah Price had 11 points and shot 3 of 6 from the field and 5 for 5 from the line. David Fuchs led the way for the Dons (5-3) with 16 points and nine rebounds. San Francisco got 12 points from Mookie Cook and 10 points from Junjie Wang. Nevada took the lead for good with four seconds remaining in the first half. The score was 38-37 at halftime, with Camper racking up 10 points.
