Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo Named Eastern Conference Player of the Week
Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo became the first Heat player this season to be named Eastern Conference Player of the Week.Adebayo, who is coming off one of his best weeks of the season, averaged 27 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game over three games this week.Adebayo entered the week coming off one of the worst shooting slumps of his career, but snapped out of it with 29 points on 11-15 shooting against the Phoenix Suns on January 13.Following his most recent performance, a 30 point 12 rebound game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Adebayo made a statement against people criticizing his offensive ability.“I don’t care about what anybody says about me offensively,” Adebayo said. “They’re gonna move the goal posts for me every night. I don’t shoot enough, I’m not being aggressive, shooting too much, it’s the wrong shot diet. So my teammates, my coaching staff, they know what I’m capable of. Obviously, every shot that I take, I work on all the time, and Spo (Spoelstra) knows that. Spo sees it.”Adebayo became the first Heat player since Tyler Herro in December 2024 to be named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. It’s Adebayo’s third time winning the award. He was also named the POTW in January 2024 and December 2019.The Miami Heat Succeed When Bam Adebayo is Dominant on OffenseBam Adebayo is considered the heart and soul of this Miami Heat basketball team. He’s the longest-tenured player on the roster, having been with the team since they drafted him in 2017. Adebayo is averaging his season low in points per game since the 2020-2021 season, but his impact still looms large.Adebayo is third on the team in plus/minus with a +115 on the season. Additionally, the Heat win more games when he’s consistently scoring. This season, the Heat are 12-7 when he scores more than 16 points in a game. His impact as a defender is important, but his impact on offense is what makes the difference between a win and a loss for the Heat.Adebayo has been able to consistently score over the past three games, making 13 threes over a three-game stretch. Mets-Brewers Trade Prediction Offloads Brett Baty for 200-Strikeout, 2X All-Star Starter
The New York Mets are looking to capitalize on an already busy offseason. After bringing in Bo Bichette on a massive free agency deal, the Mets are shipping Brett Baty away for another impact player. Could the Mets be in play for Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta? Rumors indicate that the Mets might be shifting focus to the trade market, and Peralta has been the subject of trade rumors dating back to July. It stems from the fact that he’s on an $8 million option and is set to be a free agent after this season, and the Brewers are not expected to meet his contract demands, which will be a lot. More MLB on Heavy: Mets Insider Reveals Brett Baty Role After Bo Bichette Signing Freddy Peralta Predicted to Land with Mets, Brett Baty Predicted to Land with Brewers CBS Sports’ writer RJ Anderson recently did a predictions piece ranking the remaining trade candidates this offseason, and where they will land. Anderson predicts Freddy Peralta to land with the Mets, and then subsequently predicts Brett Baty to land with the Brewers, so one could assume a fair trade would be one of the player-swap variety, or the Mets would have to throw in one of their top prospects like A.J. Ewing or Brandon Sproat to throw in a deal with Milwaukee. Peralta is flourishing into one of MLB’s best pitchers, and he would be the huge splash the Mets can make on the starting pitcher front, and it wouldn’t cost them nearly $25 million AAV, which is what the top arms are worth on the free agent market at this moment. GettyWith an opportunity to further bolster their rotation, the Mets are pushing for a Freddy Peralta trade. Would it hurt to get rid of Baty, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2025? And a top prospect in Sproat? Yes, but it might be the right move to help the Mets compete in a tough National League this season. More MLB on Heavy: Mets-Pirates Trade Idea Sends $77 Million All-Star Starter to Queens for Top Prospect Why is Freddy Peralta so Valuable? Freddy Peralta is one of the most valuable starters in MLB. He’s fresh off his best season, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings and had 204 strikeouts. 2025 marked the third straight season for Peralta making 30+ starts and recording 200+ strikeouts. There is no pitcher that is a current free agent who can match that value and production. That’s not to mention his ERA consistently sits in the mid-3.00s. If the trade rumors continue to swirl surrounding Peralta, David Stearns and company should absolutely consider a trade package that would include Brett Baty and a top prospect. Peralta has a career 3.59 ERA over 162 starts. The Mets could even choose to trade for Peralta, and then extend him as the Red Sox did with Garrett Crochet last offseason, and quite frankly, that would be the best option in this scenario for New York. Miami Dolphins Hire Most Sought After First Time Head Coach, Jeff Hafley
Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was the Ben Johnson of this year’s loaded head coaching cycle. After firing former head coach Mike McDaniel, the Miami Dolphins conducted dozens of interviews before finally landing the most sought-after first-time head coach in the league. “Dolphins are hiring former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their head coach,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. “Hafley completed his second interview with the team today and will be their new head coach.” ESPN Sources: Dolphins are hiring former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their head coach. Sullivan spent 22 years in Green Bay instilling the Super Bowl championship roots. Hafley spent just two years, quickly climbing the coaching ranks after being hired as the Packers’ defensive coordinator in 2024. Jeff Hafley Coaching Resume Hafley’s coaching career began in the early 2000’s with nearly a decade spent at the college level. His first NFL coaching job came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hafley spent two seasons coaching the defensive backs. Hafley reprised the same role with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers for five seasons before going back to the college coaching scene. He then took the job of defensive coordinator at Boston College, where he stayed for four seasons before eventually being hired by the Packers. With the Packers, he made a name for himself as one of, if not the top, defensive coordinators in the NFL. In 2024, his first year with the job, his defense allowed less than 100 yards of rushing per game and ended the year as a top-10 total defense. The defensive stats took a step back in 2025 as the team struggled with countless injuries. His reputation was not damaged by Green Bay’s regression, as made evident by nearly every team with a head coaching vacancy reaching out to him for an interview. Like Heavy Sports's content? Jets Mock Draft Lands Elite Playmakers on Offense and Defense
The New York Jets, armed with two top-16 picks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, are uniquely positioned to turn the franchise around. With Dante Moore heading back to Oregon for another season of college football, there likely won’t be a quarterback rated high enough for the Jets to pull the trigger on a new starter at No. 2, but that doesn’t mean they can’t find playmakers and add talent to their offense and defense. In the latest mock draft from Pro Football Focus, Gordon McGuinness has New York doing just that with their two premium draft selections.Jets Select Texas Tech Edge David Bailey No. 2 OverallMcGuinness’ first selection for the New York Jets is Texas Tech defensive end David Bailey, one of college football’s most dominant defenders this past season.“The news that quarterback Dante Moore is staying at Oregon for another season is a blow to the Jets, who could have either selected him at No. 2 overall or traded the pick for serious draft capital,” wrote McGuinness.“With Moore off the board, the most logical route would be to target one of the top defensive players in the draft. Bailey’s 81 quarterback pressures in 2025 led all FBS edge defenders, and while he’s not as refined a prospect as Penn State’s Abdul Carter was last year, he is more than good enough as a pass rusher to be worthy of a top-five selection.”After Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza presumably goes No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, the real draft begins with the Jets at No. 2.They’ll have several avenues available to them in terms of high-end defenders, such as Miami’s Reuben Bain Jr. or Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, but Bailey could be the best of the bunch. David Bailey against a tackle on an island – nightmare — Connor Rogers (@ConnorJRogers) January 1, 2026 ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper has Bailey as the fifth-highest rated prospect on his big board.“A transfer from Stanford, Bailey gets after the quarterback. He had 14.5 sacks over three seasons for the Cardinals, and he matched that total in 2025 alone after notably becoming more of a finisher this season,” said Kiper. His 20.2% pressure rate was the best in the nation — despite actually being lower than it was in 2024 (22.2%) and 2023 (22.1%).”With New York finishing with the 31st-least amount of sacks in the league in 2025, Bailey would be a welcome addition to their defensive line room.Jets Select Washington WR Denzel Boston No. 16 OverallWith their second first-round selection thanks to the Indianapolis Colts and Sauce Gardner, the New York Jets select Washington wide receiver Denzel Boston to improve their group of pass-catchers.“With the Jets likely to look to free agency or the trade market to fix their quarterback situation, finding the right players for their offense in the draft becomes even more important,” continued McGuinness.“Boston could be the perfect partner for Garrett Wilson at wide receiver, coming off a season in which he earned an 89.3 PFF receiving grade against man coverage and caught 76.9% of his contested targets.”Garrett Wilson was the Jets’ leading receiver in yards for the 2025 season, and his last reception came in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos. That is simply unacceptable, and while it’s easy to point to the quarterback play as the reason why, New York did nothing to add to their wide receiver room before the season, outside of adding Josh Reynolds and forcing Allen Lazard to take a pay cut.Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie, midseason acquisitions, showed some signs of life during the backend of the 2025 season, but I’m not sure you can count on either to be a legitimate threat across from Wilson on a down-to-down basis. That’s where Boston comes in. Another situation where Denzel Boston is in 1-1 coverage and the team trusts him to make the big play. His film is littered with 50/50 ball wins and impressive ability to work the boundary with his body control. The Victor Wembanyama reason Anthony Edwards was an All-Star starter snub
The starters for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game were announced on Monday, and when it comes to the Western Conference, one of the biggest snubs was Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. Edwards lost out on a starting nod for the All-Star Team by the slimmest of margins. Both Anthony Edwards and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama finished with the exact same weighted score of 5.75 in the voting, but Wembanyama ultimately got the fifth and final starter spot for the Western Conference All-Star Team due to having a higher rank in the fan voting. Edwards finished with a seven in the fan voting while Wembanyama finished with a six. Edwards is certainly deserving of a starting All-Star spot, and he will no doubt be selected to the reserve team once the coaches make their picks. The Wolves are currently in fourth place in the West standings, and Edwards is a legitimate candidate for the MVP Award. He’s appeared in 34 games this season, at a little over 35 minutes per game. He’s been averaging a career-high 29.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 50.4 percent shooting from the field, 41.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 78.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line. Once the coaches name Edwards to the reserves, he will be making his fourth consecutive All-Star appearance. Meanwhile, the other West All-Stars consisted of Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic. The Eastern Conference All-Stars were Cade Cunningham, Jaylen Brown, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Maxey. The 2026 NBA All-Star Game will take place on Feb. 15 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, CA.
