‘Most definitely, you will see this fight’: Oscar De La Hoya says he’s on board with Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz
Just a short time after largely dismissing the importance or relevance of a potential fight between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Vergil Ortiz, and a subsequent lawsuit filed against him by Ortiz, Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya now says that he certainly wants to see that fight happen. At the kickoff press conference for yesterday’s formal announcement for Mario Barrios vs Ryan Garcia, De La Hoya would say that he’s looking to make the fight that everyone wants to see (despite previously saying it was only Eddie Hearn pushing for the fight), and that his past comments were just posturing for negotiating leverage. Check out some quick hits of what De La Hoya had to say on that subject and more below. De La Hoya on Barrios vs Garcia “I really do think that this is going to be a very entertaining fight. The welterweight division is an open division right now, and it’s there for the taking. And I think just the fact that Barrios went the distance and had a draw with the great Manny Pacquiao, speaks volumes about Barrios. But then you have Ryan — I see him very focused. I see him determined and ready, and I hear he’s looking great. He really wants this so I think we’re going to see a helluva fight. Maybe there will be knockdowns with either guy but this is really a fight of who really wants it more.” On Barrios’ performance against Pacquiao “I think Barrios respected Manny a little too much because Barrios, obviously he had the chance to take him out or beat him with no problem. I think he had too much respect for Pacquiao, and I don’t blame him because one thing about Pacquiao, Pacquiao’s like a sleeper. You think that you’re going to go in there and take him out easy because he’s small…I think [Barrios] did good because of the circumstances but he could’ve done better.” On still wanting to make a Boots vs Vergil fight despite ongoing litigation with his fighter “My #1 job is to make fights. And I always try and get the most money for my fighters and that’s what a promoter does. And me as a fighter who understands the game, you know, I understand that Vergil Ortiz deserves the bigger half of the pie because of the resume, just because of who Vergil has fought and how he has performed. And so, yeah, 60/40 was a little ambitious but it’s what a promoter should do, is get the most money for your fighter. “We have an ironclad deal with Vergil Ortiz and obviously, look, I’ve never had anything wrong with Vergil. Even just two months ago he was praising Golden Boy and how good of a job I’ve done for him, so I don’t feel it’s Vergil Ortiz. I think Vergil Ortiz is a helluva human being, his father’s amazing, the way he trains him, and they’re a dynamic duo. I’ve never had any beef with him, I’m looking forward to working together to get the biggest fights, the most money possible, and moving forward we feel that Vergil Ortiz can be and will be a multi-weight champion and will go in there and destroy anybody who’s in front of him.” On Zuffa Boxing’s debut card tonight “Well, what a hell of a start, right? I mean, they promised a new toy, they promised bigger and better than me and Eddie Hearn. ‘We don’t what we’re doing’ and this and that, and you’re coming out with this?! This is your big bang? Good luck, Dana. You got to try a little harder, baby.” On whether any progress has been made on Boots vs Vergil “Has there been any movement? Look, I’ll discuss it with Eddie Hearn, who I believe is Ennis’ promoter. We’ll discuss it, we’ll talk about it. Yeah, I want to make this fight. This is the fight that everybody wants to see so I want to watch this fight because it’s a great matchup. So, yeah, I’ll talk to Eddie Hearn and we’ll take it from there, but most definitely you will see this fight.” On where Golden Boy stands in terms of finding a new broadcast partner “We’ve been in negotiations with DAZN for quite a while now. We’ve had a great relationship with DAZN, we’ve put on great events with DAZN, there’s no reason why that relationship…

Bucks vs. Thunder Player Grades: Despite blowout loss, Anthony and Nance step up
For the third time in four games, the Milwaukee Bucks were blown out by a Western Conference team, losing 122-102 to the defending NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Things have tumbled quickly for the Bucks; after winning five of their last seven games, they’ve now dropped four of five. Read our full summary of the game here and catch a six-minute audio recap on the Bucks+ podcast, Bucks In Six Minutes, below. View Link Player Grades Giannis Antetokounmpo 31 minutes, 19 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 turnovers, 8/11 FG, 3/6 FT, -11 Despite missing several big-time defensive pieces in Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, the Thunder still made it incredibly difficult for Giannis to get going. To his credit, though, GA was still very efficient, picking up another double-double and having seven assists. Grade: B- Ryan Rollins 29 minutes, 10 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 turnovers, 4/11 FG, 2/5 3P, -9 The ball pressure from OKC’s defense really made it a hard day for Rollins as well. He found his spots at times, but between Cason Wallace and Lu Dort, it was tough for him to get consistent opportunities. Grade: C- AJ Green 32 minutes, 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4/9 3P, -14 Green has really found his stroke in January. He’s been shooting 40.7% so far, and added a 44% performance last night. The Bucks have needed these types of performances from him, even in ugly losses. Grade: B Kyle Kuzma 28 minutes, 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3/11 FG, 0/5 3P, -20 Things keep trending downward for Kuzma as the season progresses. He wasn’t able to do much on defence guarding SGA (to be fair, few can), and according to Doc Rivers, he wasn’t in the right spots offensively. According to Rivers, he was supposed to be a screener and roller in the middle, but ended up just spacing and hoisting up five three-pointers. Grade: D+ Bobby Portis 37 minutes, 15 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 6/14 FG, 2/7 3P, +0 Bobby continues to be a consistent offensive player off the bench for the Bucks. He added another 15 points and even distributed the ball a little bit, doling out nine assists. Grade: B- Pete Nance 30 minutes, 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3/5 3P, +3 What a revelation Nance has been over the last two games. Last night, he played double the minutes he did on Monday and looked pretty solid on both ends. Of the players who played more than 10 minutes, he was the only Buck to be a positive in the plus/minus. Grade: B+ Cole Anthony 29 minutes, 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 turnovers, 7/9 FG, 3/4 3P, -2 With Kevin Porter Jr. out, Doc Rivers tapped Cole Anthony to return to the rotation and fill in as the backup point guard. He did well and was Bucks’ leading scorer at halftime. While he had his moments of good play, the bad with Anthony reared its ugly head again with some bone-headed turnovers. Grade: B Doc Rivers If any team has perfected the right approach to NBA basketball in the 2020s, it’s been the Thunder. The difference between them and how Doc runs the Bucks couldn’t be more stark. The way OKC runs offense and stays locked into their principles is impressive to watch. Meanwhile, the Bucks are apparently focused on the more basic elements of basketball, like moving the ball with pace. It’s the clearest example of how the modern NBA has passed Rivers by. Grade: D- Limited Minutes: Gary Harris, Andre Jackson Jr, Gary Trent Jr. Garbage Time: Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Amir Coffey, Jericho Sims Inactive: Myles Turner, Kevin Porter Jr, Taurean Prince, Alex Antetokounmpo Bonus Bucks Bits Giannis wore an All-Star patch on his jersey, commemorating his selection as a starter from the Eastern Conference. With his 10th straight selection, Giannis became the first Bucks player in franchise history to have 10 All-Star appearances with the team. Before the game, Myles Turner (left ankle sprain) and KPJ (oblique strain) were both ruled out. Rivers said that Turner is just day-to-day, but Porter could be out for some time, with no clear timetable…
