Local father-daughter duo set aside Canes-Hoosiers rivalry to join forces in the fight against cancer
Ahead of game day in South Florida, a local father and daughter aren’t playing around when it comes to defeating cancer, so much so that they’ve put their football rivalry aside for a bigger goal. Jeff and Skylah Klein’s story of rivalry has come full circle. Neverheless, they still find themselves on opposing sides of Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship pitting Jeff’s beloved Indiana Hoosiers against Skylah’s hometown team, the Miami Hurricanes. “You couldn’t script a better story. You couldn’t script a better situation,” said Jeff. Jeff graduated from Indiana University, and his daughter went to the University of Miami. “For as long as I can remember, I supported the hoosiers, because that’s where my dad went to school, grew up with red and white in the house, on the TVs and being Hoosiers fans,” said Skylah. Which wasn’t a problem, until the National Championship was set. “It’s come to life, we’re on the biggest stage in college athletics, arguably in sports in general,” said Skylah. “To be on this stage, in this serendipitious moment, is unbelievable,” said Jeff. Father and daughter rooted for each other for years. Face to face, it’s a different story. “We’re not even sitting together, I’m sitting amongst Hoosiers; she’s sitting amongst Canes,” said Jeff. But when the lights go down, they are united where it matters most to them: the fight against cancer. “When I moved to my new job in 2022, Javier from the [Dolphins Cancer Challenge] said, ‘Hey, you gotta reinvent yourself.’ I took the challenge,” said Jeff. Jeff and his college friends began riding in the Dolphins Cancer Challenge in honor of their close friend Dave, who survived colon cancer in 2016 and has battled leukemia since 2019. What started as a small group grew quickly, now riding as the “Hoosier Odyssey.” “It started with five college friends from Indiana, from all over the country, I’m proud to say that four years later, we’re a team of 60,” said Jeff But it isn’t just the Hoo. “We’re Hoosiers, we’re Hoosiers family, Hoosiers friends, we’re Canes for Hoosiers, we’re Noles for Hoosiers,” said Jeff. Skylah’s first DCC was in 2020, and when the “Hoosier Odyssey,” began she joined in. “We participate in the 5K, which is awesome, because we get to be a part of the cause and join the fight for cancer,” said Skylah. Jeff, now a board member of the DCC, has taken part in the challenge for nine years, raising over $500,000 since starting in 2018. “It’s just proven that cancer and the impact is so much larger than sport, college,” said Jeff. So while Jeff and Skylah will root against each other on the field, they hope to defeat cancer together. “Two universities raising a lot of money for Sylvester, working really hard together to fight this terrible disease, and we’re really proud of that,” said Jeff. In February, the father-daughter duo will ride together to support cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at UM’s Miller School of Medicine.

‘It’s disgusting’: Miami Beach officials outraged after influencers seen singing Kanye West’s ‘Heil Hitler’ at nightclub
A South Beach club is accused of hosting a problematic party involving a group of right-wing influencers, and what they were caught on video chanting has left city officials demanding accountability. Speaking with 7News on Sunday, Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner and City Commissioners Joe Magazine and David Suarez said they’re disgusted and angry, and they want to know why these well-known influencers were allowed inside Vendôme, a popular nightclub along the 700 block of Washington Avenue, in the first place. “People laughing and celebrating, ‘Heil Hitler’ and Adolf Hitler. I cannot believe we’re even seeing this and witnessing this in Miami Beach,” said Meiner. Now Vendôme is catching heat, accused of celebrating hate by playing a song about the Nazi leader, Saturday night. “Absolute disgust,” said Magazine. “Disgusted, horrified,” said Meiner. Videos making the rounds on social media feature “Heil Hitler,” the Kanye West song in question, which repeats the salute over and over again, as well as other profanity-laced lyrics. The same men seen in the club, known as controversial influencers, are also seen in a video recorded inside a limo. In that clip, they are singing, and one of them is performing a Nazi salute. “To have people in our city celebrating this, animals,” said Magazine. This is obviously not welcome in Miami Beach. It should not be welcome anywhere in the world,” said Suarez. “And by the way, I spoke to all the club operators. [These influencers] are not welcome in their club. How they got into this club, open arms, I want to know how,” said Meiner. A spokesperson for Vendôme released a statement on social media that reads in part: “We want to be unequivocally clear. Vendôme and our hospitality group do not condone antisemitism, hate speech or prejudice of any kind… We are deeply disturbed by the harm caused by this incident and the circulation of this footage.” The post explains the business is looking into safeguards and procedures to make sure this doesn’t happen again. As for the men in the video celebrating the song, city officials did not mince words when they said they want these influences to stay away from Miami Beach. “You’re disgusting human beings, and I don’t want to see you in Miami Beach.” said Magazine. “You’re not welcome,” said Suarez. “It’s disgusting, it’s shameful, and you’re not welcome in Miami Beach,” said Meiner. Meiner was not the only local mayor with something to say about the matter. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released a statement on social media, writing in part: “Hate has no home in Miami-Dade county. Reports of nazi slogans at a miami beach club are deeply disturbing and unacceptable. We stand against anti-semitism and all hate, and expect swift accountability to keep our community safe and respectful for all.”

Death toll in Spanish train collision rises to 39 as authorities fear more bodies could be found
ADAMUZ, Spain (AP) — Spanish police said Monday that at least 39 people are confirmed dead in a high-speed rail collision the previous night in the south of the country when the tail end of a train jumped the track, causing another train speeding past in the opposite direction to derail. The impact tossed the second train’s lead carriages off the track, sending them plummeting down a 4-meter (13-foot) slope. Some bodies were found hundreds of meters (feet) from the crash site, Andalusia regional president Juanma Moreno said, describing the wreckage a “mass of twisted metal” with bodies likely still to be found inside. Efforts to recover the bodies continued Monday, and the death toll could rise. Authorities are also focusing on attending hundreds of distraught family members and have asked for them to provide DNA samples to help identify victims. The crash occurred Sunday at 7:45 p.m. when the tail end of a train carrying 289 passengers on the route from Malaga to the capital, Madrid, went off the rails. It slammed into an incoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, another southern Spanish city, according to rail operator Adif. The head of the second train, which was carrying nearly 200 passengers, took the brunt of the impact, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente said. That collision knocked its first two carriages off the track. Puente said that it appeared the largest number of the deaths occurred in those carriages. Authorities said all the survivors had been rescued in the early morning. Three days of mourning for a nation in shock The accident shook a nation which leads Europe in high-speed train mileage and takes pride in a network that is considered at the cutting edge of rail transport. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the crash. “Today is a day of pain for all of Spain,” Sánchez said on a visit to Adamuz, a village near the accident site, where many locals helped emergency services handle the influx of distraught and hurt passengers overnight. Twisted metal after a violent impact Moreno, the regional leader, said Monday morning that emergency services were still searching for bodies. “Here at ground zero, when you look at this mass of twisted iron, you see the violence of the impact,” Moreno said. “The impact was so incredibly violent that we have found bodies hundreds of meters away.” Video released by the Civil Guard showed the worst-hit carriages shredded open, train seats cast on the gravel packing under the tracks. One carriage lay on its side, bent around a large concrete pillar, with debris scattered around the area. Passengers reported climbing out of smashed windows, with some using emergency hammers to break the glass. Andalusia’s regional emergency services said 43 people remained hospitalized, 12 of whom were in intensive care units. Another 79 passengers were discharged by Monday afternoon, authorities said. Train services Monday between Madrid and cities in Andalusia were canceled, causing large disruptions. Spanish airline Iberia added flights to Seville and another two to Malaga to help stranded travelers. Some bus companies also reinforced their services in the south. Officials call accident ‘strange’ Transport Minister Puente early Monday said the cause of the crash was unknown. He called it “a truly strange” incident because it happened on a flat stretch of track that had been renovated in May. He also said the train that jumped the track was less than 4 years old. That train belonged to the Italian-owned company Iryo, while the second train was part of Spain’s public train company, Renfe. According to Puente, the back part of the first train derailed and crashed into the head of the other train. An investigation into the cause could take a month, he said. Álvaro Fernández, the president of Renfe, told Spanish public radio RNE that both trains were well under the speed limit of 250 kph (155 mph); one was going 205 kph (127…

Explosion in downtown Kabul kills at least 7, injures many others, officials say
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An explosion in downtown Kabul on Monday killed at least seven people and wounded about a dozen more, according to an Italian medical charity running a surgical care facility in the city. The reasons for the blast were not immediately clear. The explosion appeared to have hit a restaurant in the Shahr-e-Naw district of the Afghan capital. In the first few minutes after the blast, a police spokesman, Khalid Zadran, had identified the facility affected as a hotel. The Italian NGO, EMERGENCY, said its surgical center in Kabul had received 20 people from the blast, including seven who were already dead when they arrived. It noted the number of casualties was “still provisional.” Those injured included four women and a child, the organization’s Country Director in Afghanistan, Dejan Panic, said. “The wounded, some of whom are being assessed for surgery, have suffered lacerations and bruises,” he added. Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said the blast had caused both deaths and injuries but did not have any details on the numbers. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said two Chinese people had been seriously injured and a security guard had been killed in the blast, which it said had occurred at a restaurant. Footage aired by local television station Tolo News and filmed through a car windscreen showed people in the street with smoke and dust billowing behind them.
