Most of the other owners these days are billionaires or private equity firms that made money from other businesses and then bought football teams as a vanity project. The only way the Rooneys can make more money is either by football itself generating more revenue or by selling team shares. There's an interesting article on ESPN about the Lakers and being a family-run sports franchise. They were rich, of course, but weren't rolling in dough. Even though they were the Lakers, the family didn't really have mega-wealth until they sold the team. The family back-stabbing part of the story is interesting, too.
