Winter storm bears down on Chicago area with "intense" snow expected Sunday

Chicago is under a winter storm watch as a lake-effect snow system is set to bring the first snow since March to the region Sunday evening. There's a small chance that slushy accumulation of 1 to 2 inches could hit Saturday night, while “intense bands” of snow are expected Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS has predicted 7 to 15 inches of snow for the Chicago area through Tuesday evening. But meteorologist Gino Izzi said it was too early to say definitively how much snow the Chicago area could see because of the nature of lake-effect snow."It could be that Lincoln Park is getting an inch and Logan Square is getting a foot," Izzi said. The snow system will also bring much colder temperatures to the region. Saturday night is expected to see rain mixing with snow, with a low temperature of 28 degrees. On Sunday, the daytime temperature will hover around the mid-30s when the Bears face off against the Giants, while the snow in the evening will send wind chills into the teens. The snow Sunday night could create “significant travel impacts” in areas around Lake Michigan, the NWS said. For air travelers, this could add to the mass cancellation of flights at O’Hare and Midway airports due to the Federal Aviation Administration’s airspace restrictions. Airlines are expected to cut 4% of their flights this weekend and up to 10% next week.Ninety-four flights at O’Hare and 17 at Midway have been canceled for Sunday, with another 83 cancellations scheduled for Monday across the two airports, according to flight tracking app FlightAware. It's unclear if the cancellations stem from the airspace restrictions or the approaching storm.

Artists highlight lasting impact of Chicago's 1919 race riot with glass markers in the Loop

For many, the corner of Adams Street and Wabash Avenue is just a busy stop on their way to see a show at the Chicago Theatre, attend a festival at Grant Park or take in the sights at the Art Institute. For Paul Hardwick, it was where he took his last breath.More than 100 years ago, the African American man was on his way to work at the Palmer House hotel when he was chased by a mob of about 30 white aggressors. He was shot in the chest, beaten and robbed. He was long forgotten as one of 38 killed in the Chicago Race Riot of 1919, which historians say is not often taught or discussed. A mob of white men chased and killed Paul Hardwick at the corner of Adams Street and Wabash Avenue in 1919. Volunteers with The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project have been installing brick-shaped glass memorials in sidewalks throughout the city at sites where the killings occurred.Pat Nabong/Sun-Times But now Hardwick is immortalized with a marker at the site of his death, thanks to The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project. For years, a team of volunteers has been installing brick-shaped glass memorials in sidewalks throughout the city where the killings occurred. The pieces were created by young people who have been impacted by violence. Their work was overseen by Firebird Community Arts, an East Garfield Park organization that has a trauma-informed arts program. Related Neighborhood gallery to close with exhibition offering sneak peek of memorials commemorating 1919 race riots Of the 19 markers installed so far, Hardwick’s plaque is one of the most recent. It was featured on a public walking tour Saturday following a panel discussion about the project at the Harold Washington Library Center. The remaining 19 will be installed over the next several months, said Peter Cole, a history professor at Western Illinois University and co-founder of the project. Myles Francis with the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project, speaks about a sidewalk marker for Robert Williams during a walking tour in the Loop on Saturday.Pat Nabong/Sun-Times Cole and the other project leaders say they not only want to honor the dead, but highlight the riot’s impact on lasting structural inequities in the city.“Our goal was to have something embedded in the community — literally embedded in the concrete,” said Myles X Francis, director of operations for the project. “As people are heading to work, walking to parks and going out to restaurants, they're stumbling across this history. It's a conversation piece.”The race riot was sparked on July 27, 1919, when Eugene Williams, a Black 17-year-old, was killed at “whites-only” 29th Street Beach. George Stauber, a 24-year-old white man, hurled stones at Williams until he drowned. The city erupted into racial violence for a week as white mobs terrorized Black residents. The incident claimed the lives of 23 Black people and 15 white people. The rioters largely went unpunished. Markisha Johnson, 22, designs glass markers for the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project at Firebird Community Arts studio in Garfield Park. The markers were created by people impacted by violence.Pat Nabong/Sun-Times Acts of racial terror like the 1919 riot helped fuel segregation, which resulted in the concentration of Black Chicagoans in neighborhoods neglected by the city, Francis said. “We have these landmark events to walk people through the history and help them understand how it's connected to the way that the city looks, the way people move around the city and the opportunities that they have access to today," he said. The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project kicked off in 2019, the 100-year anniversary of the tragedy. It was spearheaded by Cole and Franklin Cosey-Gay, executive director of community and external affairs for the Urban Health Initiative at University of Chicago Medicine. Other collaborators include Syda Segovia Taylor, executive director of social justice organization Organic…

When a group of Oak Park Girl Scouts and their parents set out for the group’s annual food drive Saturday morning, they imagined it would be a day of helping in their community.Instead, the girls encountered masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with weapons and vehicles with dark-tinted windows as the sounds of whistles pierced the air.“It just went from a morning of us trying to do something good…

Oliver Thulin's pick-six seals Downers Grove North's playoff win against Glenbard West

It’s been a very successful few years for Downers Grove North’s football and basketball programs. Both teams have done just about everything except win a state title. And that’s still very possible for the football team this season. The Thulin family has been at the center of it all. First it was Owen and Ethan, and now it is Oliver. He’s the third brother to play football for the Trojans. His clutch interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter on Saturday in Glen Ellyn clinched Downers Grove North’s 19-7 win against Glenbard West in the Class 7A second round.“If they threw that route, I was going for it,” Thulin said. “They threw it and I went to my spot and I got it. I’m grateful for it.”Thulin, a defensive back and receiver, caught the interception at the 29-yard line of Glenbard West and returned it for a score.“Honestly, [catches] feel better on defense,” Thulin said.Glenbard West (9-2) trailed 13-7 and had 3:10 left to get down the field and win the game when Thulin grabbed the interception.“That is a tremendous football family,” Downers Grove North coach Joe Horeni said. “They have done a lot of great things for our program.”Campbell Thulin, Oliver’s sister, is a standout basketball player for the Trojans.“It is the best thing you can have, family success,” Oliver Thulin said. “Not just seeing me succeed but all my siblings. My past siblings, looking up to them. And my little sister being the star athlete in the family. It’s awesome.”Downers Grove North (9-2) managed only 49 total yards of offense in the first half but led 6-0 after a Glenbard West interception led to a short field. Caden Chiarelli scored on a four-yard run midway through the first quarter to open the scoring. It was Chiarelli again in the third quarter with a darting 17-yard TD run to put the Trojans ahead 13-0.Glenbard West scored on an eight-yard run by Amari Harris with 11:51 to play. Harris plowed through the pile with a big second effort and limped into the end zone.“You certainly can’t turn it over in your red zone,” Hilltoppers coach Chad Hetlet said. “Our defense played really well. We had an unfortunate turnover and penalties on offense that set us back. Downers Grove North played outstanding defense. They beat our offensive line up front.” Downers Grove North’s Caden Chiarelli (4) carries the ball for a touchdown against Glenbard West.Kirsten Stickney/For the Sun-Times Trojans quarterback Owen Lansu, a Minnesota recruit, was 15-for-20 for 112 yards. Thulin had eight catches for 59 yards.“I’m very proud of our kids for the perseverance they’ve shown through injuries to very key players,” Horeni said. “They’ve stood the test. We executed offensively in certain moments, and it was an unbelievable job by our defense.”Illinois recruit Will Vala leads the Trojans’ defensive line and also plays tight end. He’s part of a core group of seniors who have taken Downers Grove North on deep playoff runs the past three seasons.“We have so many guys that have been under pressure before and know how to win those type of games,” Chiarelli said. “That makes a huge difference.”Jamarcus Kelly had 21 carries for 75 yards for Glenbard West. Hilltoppers quarterback AJ Rayford was 17-for-28 for 133 yards with two interceptions.“Our seniors don’t have superstar talent,” Hetlet said. “But their leadership was unbelievable. The way they committed themselves in the offseason was second to none. It was the best offseason we’ve ever had. We went from 4-5 to 9-2. I couldn’t be more proud of those guys.”Downers Grove North will host Lincoln-Way West in the quarterfinals next weekend. Downers Grove North only gained 49 yards in the first half, so this play is huge. Caden Chiarelli with a tough 17-yard TD. They look like a very legitimate, very competitive, very real NHL team.Oddsmakers still consider them the third-most likely team to finish with the league’s worst record, but their 7-5-3 mark can’t be disputed. DETROIT — It’s hard to believe this is already Patrick Kane’s third season with the Red Wings, but it is. He’ll log his 129th game with the winged wheel adorning his chest Sunday against the Blackhawks.Half of Kane’s brain also finds that hard to believe.
