Devils Could Lose Young D-Man for Season, per Expert Opinion
The New Jersey Devils’ woes have hit a new low this season. On Monday, the club escaped with two crucial points, as they topped the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime. But along the way, the team lost defenseman Luke Hughes to injury.During the second period, a seemingly innocuous play led to Hughes pulling up in the middle of the ice, clutching his shoulder. He immediately went to the bench in evident agony. Here’s a look at the play: A better look at the Luke Hughes injury from tonight #NJDevils pic.twitter.com/zBnIzslzBB — Josh (@joshlangerr) January 20, 2026 The replay shows the Flames’ Justin Kirkland tugging on the Devils defenseman’s jersey. The color commentary made a point of how a move in the wrong direction could lead to a tweak or something.Unfortunately, Hughes did not return to the game following that incident. Later, insider Frank Seravalli offered some insight into the Devils’ blueliner’s potential injury. Servalli reported that Hughes had sustained a separated shoulder. There was no additional information following the game. Sounds like initial diagnosis was #njdevils Luke Hughes dislocated his shoulder tonight in Calgary. Will await word from Devils postgame and potential timeline as he continues to be evaluated. — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) January 20, 2026 Meanwhile, the Devils will continue to evaluate Hughes to determine the next course of action and potential timeline. However, one notable medical expert, Dr. Harjas Grewal, weighed in on the situation. He initially tweeted the following assessment based solely on Servalli’s comments, underscoring the potential need for surgery. Lots of nuances will dictate timeline for Luke Hughes If can rehab and return, will be week-to-week still If surgery is necessary, it’s 5+ months out Treatment plan will come down to exam findings and MRI https://t.co/WGdmyCLWxO — Dr. Harjas Grewal (@Harjas_Grewal) January 20, 2026 Grewal followed up his first tweet by stating that the Devils may contemplate surgery at this point or after the season. Adding on to earlier post as now have video If Hughes is dislocating his shoulder this easily, wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up needing surgery either now or after this season https://t.co/MpGpB91E67 — Dr. Harjas Grewal (@Harjas_Grewal) January 20, 2026 Even if Hughes and the Devils avoid surgery, it doesn’t look like Hughes will be out for a couple of weeks. It seems this injury will be serious enough to keep the young D-man sidelined for an extended period.Hughes Brothers Have Tough Luck with DevilsLuke Hughes will now join brother Jack on the Devils’ list of unfortunate injuries. Earlier this year, Jack Hughes sustained a significant cut in a hand during a team dinner. The “freak accident” caused Jack to miss some time while his hand healed.According to reports, Jack slipped at the table he was dining at, breaking a glass with his hand. The shards made a deep cut into his hand, requiring several stitches to patch up.The Devils went into a tailspin without Jack Hughes. The team recovered upon his return, but has since remained stuck in neutral. Now, the latest inexplicable injury to befall the Devils has claimed Luke Hughes as its victim. It could be that the club’s playoff hopes could come under serious threat moving forward.Prognosis on Hughes Injury Could Determine Deadline PlansThe prognosis on Luke Hughes’ injury could determine the Devils’ trade deadline plans. In particular, the injury may force the team to hold on to a defenseman they have been looking to trade. That defenseman is Dougie Hamilton. Missing Hughes for an extended period will open up a lineup spot. Hamilton could fill that spot, potentially forcing the club to hold onto him. The Devils remain in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. So, it makes sense that GM Tom Fitzgerald may rethink his moves going forward.Still, the entire equation hinges on Hughes’ prognosis. If Hughes doesn’t miss time beyond the Olympics, the Devils may catch a break. Like…

Major Update Emerges on Kyrie Irving Injury Return
Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has been sidelined since March 2025 after suffering a torn ACL, but signs are beginning to point towards a long-awaited return. As injuries continue to pile up for Dallas, optimism has quietly grown around the 33-year-old’s recovery.NBA Hall of Famer and analyst Reggie Miller has suggested that Irving could be targeting a mid-February return, a timeline that would align with the standard nine-to-12-month recovery window for ACL injuries.Even without a firm timetable, the broader picture indicates the Mavericks’ star guard is entering the final stages of rehabilitation.Kyrie Irving’s Return Could Shift Dallas’ SeasonDespite a season defined by injuries, Dallas has shown unexpected resilience. Led by rookie Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks have won three straight games and currently sit 12th in the Western Conference at 18-26.Earlier indications following Anthony Davis’ latest injury pointed toward a deeper slide down the standings. Instead, Dallas now sits just two games outside the play-in zone, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise turbulent campaign.Irving’s potential return would represent a significant competitive boost if the Mavericks can continue building momentum.Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal previously reported that Irving was expected to return this season, with the strongest possibility coming after the All-Star break.“While the Mavericks have not publicly communicated a return timetable for Irving, sources tell DallasHoopsJournal.com there has been no indication he will be shut down for the season,” Afseth wrote.“Instead, the prevailing expectation is that Irving’s return would more realistically come after the NBA All-Star break as it stands, rather than before it.”Kyrie Irving Nearing the Final Stage of RecoveryDallas’ first game following the All-Star break is a February 20 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, a date that looms as a potential checkpoint for Irving’s availability. That timing would place his return just shy of the 12-month mark since the initial injury, consistent not only with physical recovery but also with the confidence required to move freely and explosively post-surgery.Back in November, Andscape’s Marc J. Spears reported that Irving was “ahead of schedule” in his rehabilitation and suggested a return by late January or after the All-Star break.Spears added that, if the Mavericks were in a playoff situation, Irving would likely accelerate his timeline to get back on the floor sooner.“Optimistic-wise, probably around late January, All-Star break,” Spears said. “Someone close to him told me that if it was the playoffs, he could play right now. That’s how ahead of schedule he is.”More recently, Afseth offered further encouragement after observing Irving in person.“From a firsthand perspective, Irving’s progress has been evident,” Afseth added. “During a workout observed while the Mavericks were on the road, he looked sharp, explosive, and efficient as he moved through a full on-court session.”For a Mavericks team starved of positive injury news, Irving’s impending return represents a rare source of optimism. If he does make it back around the All-Star break, Dallas could find itself with just enough time and momentum to make a late-season push. Cowboys ‘Trending’ Toward Key Decision at Quarterback
One of the obvious truths of the modern era of the NFL is one the Dallas Cowboys know well: You’d better have a top-shelf starter at quarterback. That’s Dak Prescott. But one of the lesser truths that many teams have learned the hard way is that you’d also better have a very trustworthy QB2. Is that Joe Milton?Teams like the Commanders, Bengals and Colts learned that lesson the hard way in 2025. A team like the 49ers, though, showed what having a Mac Jones behind Brock Purdy can do for a team. For a long time, the Cowboys had a certain level of faith in Cooper Rush behind Prescott–he was 4-0 in his first starts in Dallas. But Rush faltered in 2024 in place of Prescott, after the QB1 went down with a hamstring injury, going 4-4 in his place. Now, the question is, has Milton earned that same level of trust Rush once had?Joe Milton Is the Current Cowboys QB2Milton, of course, was raw when he came out of Tennessee two years ago and slipped to the sixth round, where the Patriots took him. The Cowboys brought in him by trade last offseason, and there’s no doubt he is still raw. His numbers in four appearances for Dallas: 15-for-24 passing, 183 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown. But the Cowboys apparently plan to keep him on as the primary backup. As Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com wrote: “Joe Milton is the only other quarterback on the roster, as Will Grier was not signed to a reserve/futures deal. … For now, Milton will remain Prescott’s backup, and it appears to be trending that way for a second season.” GettyWill Grier #15 of the Dallas Cowboys Arm Strength, Lack of Polish Still on Joe Milton Scouting ReportAs Yarrish points out, the reviews on Milton have not changed much since college. He has great arm talent but does not possess enough of a grasp of all the intricacies of running an offense that a QB needs to truly be a starter in the NFL. Milton has a supremely strong arm–that raw ability is the reason he is in the league–but he needs polish. The Cowboys, as things stand, apparently have some faith that Milton will continue to improve as a quarterback and not just a thrower. They can afford to do that in January. But as the offseason wears on, there’s some question about whether the Cowboys could push Milton back and bring in a more plug-and-play backup for Prescott, who will be 33 this season. Are There Quality Backups for the Cowboys Out There?A decision like that might require three QBs on the roster, which teams don’t generally like to do (but which the Cowboys did while holding out hope for Trey Lance). Or it could mean bringing Grier back as a practice-squadder, with the possibility he could leapfrog Milton. It would also mean a quality backup hitting the market, which is no guarantee. Do Marcus Mariota, Tyrod Taylor or Joe Flacco count as “quality”?Yarrish wrote: “Should Grier not return, it would be interesting to see who the Cowboys would pursue in the free agency market. They would likely look for a veteran at the position, but would they be required to carry three QBs on the active roster or could they find someone willing to be on the practice squad?”The Cowboys, then, might be trending toward Joe Milton. But it’s not Milton-or-bust, yet. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us.
