Hintz caps Stars’ comeback with overtime goal in 3-2 win over Senators
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Dallas scored three straight goals and Roope Hintz scored at 3:04 of overtime to lift the Stars over the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Tuesday night. Linus Ullmark made a couple big saves but Hintz capped off the come-from-behind victory. Mikko Rantanen and Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars, who outshot the Senators 16-6 in the third. Trailing 2-1, the Stars came out pressing in the third and were rewarded on the power play when Robertson beat Ullmark glove side. Ullmark finished with 30 saves. The Senators played the final 40 minutes without Thomas Chabot, who suffered an upper-body injury late in the first. Ottawa generated a number of good chances but couldn’t get anything past Jake Oettinger, who stopped 27 shots, after the first period. Drake Batherson opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game taking a pass from Jake Sanderson and wiring a wrister from the faceoff circle. Ottawa made it 2-0 midway through the first when Nick Jensen cut across the front and beat Oettinger up high. The Senators had won eight consecutive home games against the Dallas Stars, dating back to Feb. 9, 2017. Up next Stars: Visit the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. DETROIT (AP) — TJ Nadeau had 16 points in Detroit Mercy’s 92-54 win against Cleary on Tuesday. Nadeau had six rebounds for the Titans (1-2). Ayden Carter added 15 points and eight rebounds, and shot 5 of 7 from the field. Keshawn Fisher scored 14. Jacob Mueller finished with seven points and six rebounds for the Cougars. Cleary also got seven points and two steals from Amare Slaughter. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jakob Chychrun scored his 100th career goal, Alex Ovechkin got his 901st into the empty net and the Washington Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday night. Brandon Duhaime and Dylan Strome also scored, and Logan Thompson made 30 saves for the Capitals, who have won just two of their last eight. John Carlson added two assists to extend his points streak. He has two goals and four assists over four games. Nikolaj Ehlers scored his third goal of the season, and Frederick Andersen stopped 24 shots for the Hurricanes. A scrum with 5 minutes left in the first period was sparked by Nic Dowd, who ran into Andersen while chasing the puck behind the net. It resulted in 18 minutes of penalties. There were 22 minutes of penalties in the feisty first period. The game settled down after the intermission, adding just 12 more penalty minutes over the final 40 minutes. Andersen left with about five minutes left in the third after Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal ran into his own goalie while chasing after a puck. BALTIMORE (AP) — Ari Fulton scored the game-winning jump shot as time expired and racked up 22 total points to lead NJIT past Loyola (MD) 66-64 on Tuesday night. Fulton also added 14 rebounds for the Highlanders (2-1). Jeremy Clayville scored 14 points while going 5 of 11 (4 for 7 from 3-point range). David Bolden shot 1 for 10 (0 for 5 from 3-point range) and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line to finish with seven points. Jonas Sirtautas led the Greyhounds (1-2) in scoring, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Braeden Speed added 14 points, four assists and three steals for Loyola. Troy Cicero also had nine points. NJIT went into the half leading Loyola 29-27. Clayville scored nine points in the half.
